CRICKET. [Newspaper Article] — Record — 12 May 1870

CRICKET. In consequence of the "wet ?weather, that has set in unusually early year, the last four matches arranged for the South Melbourne Cricket Club could not be played, and the club is now busy repairing damages and re laying the turf, -which we are glad to perccive shows indications of beingi really first-class when required.for nex,^ season. A large quantity of trees have been obtained and planted, and if the1 ground can only be kept clear of/the mischievous young urchins, who take such delight in destroying everythings growing, it will present a very respect-^ able appearance next summer. The main thing wanted now is a pavilion^/ and it is to be hoped that ways and means will be forthcoming for such a desirable object. It a disgrace to such a large community as Emerald Hill that such a shanty as been so long an eyesore-surely a sufficient number'of gentry could be found to- give. their> assistance, and by their help put the South Melbourne Cricket Club upon a level with it...

CLERICAL MUMMERIES-., --» '' Dr. Young, a very good authority on that sort of thing, said " Religion neve? was designed to make our' pleasure' less," and I generally agree with that worthy divine r but I do protest against the mixture, the unscemingly mingling of the secular with the,. ,re^ ligious-the serious with the ludicrous -it is a yoking of the ox with the'aSBv, and I trust the clerical celebrity. .to whom I refer will not object to the comparison. The Rev. Mr. Charles Clark has seen fit to imitate, or emu late Spurgeon, and to give readings, of respectable but humorous authors natheless, from a pulpit of a place of worship, and in coarse disregard of the conventionalities and decencies has seen fit, while standing in the place from whence he on the Sunday preaches the Gospel of Christ, and in a place de voted to divine worship,. to imitate, and I learn, very successfully the man ner of a drunken man. Mr. Clark has come to this colony with an idea; and to some extent a correc...
