The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, JULY 28, 1881. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 July 1881

QEc W atfrrag 5 narbian. THURSDAY, JULY 2S, 1SS1. Wats the Department of Justice in tie late Government was liberally distributing favors by appointing a number of gentlemen to the honors of the Justiciary Bench, had the legal authorities been at all in a practical frame of mind, it might have occurred to them that, if not absolutely neces sary, it was, at all events, highly desirable to appoint a second police magistrate and warden for the district of Gippsland. That Mr. Howitt is indefatigable in doing as much as it is possible for one man to do is unques tioned, and indeed it is almost a cer tainty that there are very few, if any, on the stipendiary bench who would be capable of satisfactorily discharging the duties at present imposed on him. This remark is not made by way of comparison as to ability, but to be a police magistrate for Gippsland, a man requires not only a knowledge of the law, but an iron constitution to boot. Heshould have thequalifications of a Rhadamanthus and ...

THE MINISTERIAL ELECTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 July 1881

THE AMINISTERIAL ELEC TIONS. The Ministerial elections for West Bourke. Ararat, Delatite, and Moira took place on Tuesday, and resulted in the return of the Ministry with the exception of Mr. Gaunson, whose de feat will not surprise any one. In fact, the result of the elections was ex actly what had been predicted for a week previously. West Bourko was of course, the main centre of interest, and, in that electorate, the contest was pretty close, Sir Bryan only secur ing his seat by the small majority of 91 votes. At Ararat Mr. Grinnson lost his seat by 203 votes, and, no doubt, the general verdict throughout the colony will be, "serve him right." In Delatite Mr. Graves was returned, with further returns to come, by a majority of about 160, and in Moira Mr. Bolton is, by the returns to hand, 250 votes ahead of his opponent, Mr. Sharpe. The following are the results to hand: WEST BOURKE. O'Loghlen ... ... ... 14o Reid ... ....... ... 1449 Majority for O'Loghlen... 91 ARARAT. Wilson .....

CORRESPONDENCE. A PRODUCE STORE AT WARRAGUL. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 July 1881

CORRESPONDENCE. A PRODUCE STORE AT WARRAGUL. TO THE EDITORE. Sea,-I beg to call your attention to the following paragraph from the "Age" of July 26th :--"A deputation from farmers in the Mooroopna district yesterday asked the Minister of Railways to permit a company which has been formed there to erect a granary in the reserve near the station for the storage of wheat and other produce, in tended to be conveyed to the market by rail. Mr. Bent assented to the request, and said that the department would determine the rent which would have to. be paid for the occupation of the land." This is a subject that I have frequently advocatedin connec tioa with the Warragul station, and I think that the people of this shire should endeavor to get one at every station in order that they might cart their produce. in-while the roads were good, and store it till Euch times as the market suited best for selling. I was isforaeq by Mr., Wlliam cadley the ether week that if they could have stored their...

AN EXPLANATION. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 28 July 1881

AN EXPLANATION. TO THE EDITOR. Sm,-May I beg your aid in redressing a wrong which I have no other means of rectifying. . Certain calumnious statements have been circulated respecting myself to the effect that I was the instigation of proceedings lately taken against Mrs. Atkinson for sly grog selling. I know the person who has spread these reports (which have naturally done me much harm in my lpsiness as a hotel keeper) but have no redress against him, inasmuch as he is not "worth powder and shot." May I therefore, through the medium of your columns, put myself right with the public by stating that I had nothing what ever to do with the matter, and I hold ample prcof of the fact, which I shall be happy to show to any person who may be curious on the subject. Yours truly. THOS. HALL. Commercial Hotel. Waterloo. July 27th, 1881.
