CORRESPONDENCE U.L.V. POLL DEPOSIT (To the Editor) [Newspaper Article] — Frankston Standard — 17 November 1949

CORRESPONDENCE U.L.V' POiL DEPOSIT (To the"Editor) Sir, -- It is to be hoped that the Couicil `does ,.not adopt the Shire Secretary's'. opinion or sug gestion':that the amount of de posit on'g a poll should be raised from £20 to £100. :This would be a retrograde step ,to" deprive the citizens of their only means of cairying out their wishes in these matters. It is hard to understand the secretary's .attitude. As a re tiirned 'serviceman' who fought for his country and "This Free .dom," he .now seeks to take away the democratic rights of the ratepayir:by, proposing a prohibi tive deposit, "no.' doubt to nullify any furthler efforts', by the rate payer~ on matte's of reform. Why should .there 'be' ,ny deposit at all? 'Repuitable citizens of the Shire'do-. iht ,haiass the Council with a poll on" frivilous matters. £20. deposit .' is hard enough to raise; how. then cEuld we be ex pected" to' raise £100? No doubt the Council'is well aware of this, and it::'irould. helP; to keep 'the rate...

Let's Write a Letter TO THOSE WHO CONTROL MELBOURNE'S ROAD TRAFFIC. [Newspaper Article] — Frankston Standard — 17 November 1949

Let's Wr, tse a Letter TO THOSE WHO CONTROL MELBOURNE'S ROAD TRAFFIC, - Sirs,-, S.Experience is proving that traffic lights are not a substitute . for a policeman on point duty. In the City, and in the suburbs, in one street you will find huiidreds of cars held up by a red lilght, ililst the gree* s9hines merrily on in the other direction, with hardly a vehicle within c ooee. This system causes banking up of traffic, with the resultant scramble, and when hundreds of cars are concerned, it is a situation full of menace. Recently Moorabbin Council installed lights at the corner of Nepean Highway and' Chesterville Road. The result, particu larly on. a Sunday afternoon, is really appalling. Two rows of cars banked up tiglit in both directions, running back seiaral Shundred yards, is a common experience, whilst the traffic in the cross road might be one or two cars! It's farcical. Of course,, pedestritans niust Ie protected, but surely the present system is wasteful from whatever angle y...
