MEETING OF PROTEST. j It would hardly be -doing^jUstice tot the gathering of "Paying guests " and sundry seekers after enjoyment which was held in the open air at the Club Hote last night to enter an emphatic protest against the in- crease by over thirty per cent of the tariff -at the State hotels, to say that it exceeded all expectations. When it became known that one old and highly-respected as well as eloquent- ly-cultured and influential boarder would address all concerned on the astounding act of profiteering, en- thusiasm and appreciation ran high, knowing that a treat was in store-a treat, too, which was entirely ex- empt from both original cost and ad- ded profit, and the large gathering was by no means disappointed. Mr. Grenier was voted to the chair and briefly, and quite composedly, explained the serious objects of the meeting calling upon the distinguish- ed spokesman of the boarders, Mr. Richards, to address the great gat- hering. ULSTER ELECTIONS HUGE SINN FEIN MINORITY The Unionists secured all the eight seats in the south and east divisions of Belfast. Sir Robert Anderson, Unionist, with 13,466 votes and Professor Mc- Neill, Sinn Feiner, with 11,866 votes headed the poll for Londonderry. The two remaining seats were fil- ed by Unionists on the second and third counts. Three Unionists, with Devlin, Nat- ionalist, were returned for .North Belfast. Later. The Ulster elections are virtually completed. The Northern« Parlia- ment will consist of 40 Unionists, 6 Sinn Feiners and 6 Nationalists. The Parliament will meet on June yth to elect a Speaker.

A MODERN CRUSOE. An exhibitor at the Sydney Show who has a forty-acre farm near Gos* ford exhibited 14 different fruit juices, fifteen sorts of chutneys, ten v sauces, four different vinegars, forty jams and forty jellies, and a variety of pickles. He also has his^own cow and makes his own butter, keeps bees, extracts the honey from the" hives, and melts the bees wax. Fur- -' ther he grows and shows thirty kinds of corn, including the sort which he himself causes to pop. In addition -. he is responsible for preserved eggs, candied peel, pickled pears, and5 dried raisins. .And, of course, hef grows his own vegetables and wheat ~ sorghum, barley, oats, and grasses. By way of breaking the monotony' he grows a bit of cotton, compounds of dandelion tea, makes seven sorts of wines, and a good sample of cider. Incidentally he works through his spells, and about the only time he is'nt toiling is when he is asleep. But even then he is probably dreaming of work. 1L_ ' J

A LEGEND OF WATERLOO. Old gunpowder snifflers still refer", to the legend, "Up, Guards, and at " 'em," as having been uttered by Wellington at Waterloo. The say« ing is, of course, nothing more or less than a myth. , It was not the Guards that broke the French at Waterloo; it was the 52nd Light In- fantry. Once realise it was - a .foot, regiment and the phrase becomes an absurdity.

A letter from a branch sec- retary in Ireland to the headquart- ers here of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners says: "Please excuse delay, as it is difficult to hold a meeting. The military - sweep down on us whenever they find a meeting going on. They make us hold our hands up with fixed bay onets till they search us and exam" ine our books."
