n-s men, tuursda-t. a ugust±\. i86«. It is impossible to disguise from the public that tbc election for the Western Downs will- depeud, to some extent, upon the personal character of Sir. 51OPFAXT, and to a much greater ex tent upon the general character of die Ministry. We are glad to find that Sir Hissr has declared himself a. thorough opponent of the n»en to whom fora short time the conduct of public affairs in Queensland has been com mitted. Undoubtedly some suspicion might have attached to him as a, repre sented nominee of the lion. Mr. Firz, but we are gratified to find that this nomineeiBm has been most emphatically disclaimed by the candidate, and tbat the disclaimer has been endorsed by the straightforward conduct of Mr. Cootb in resigning in his favour, after hearing a fall and unreserved expression of Me opinions. Under these circumstances it ib the boanden duty of ail members of the liberal party to support Mr. Hxasr. We &re somewhat at a. loss to reconcile the l...
