HORTICULTURAL NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 18 September 1896

mmmiMRRh N0m [from our exchanges. i All fruitgrowers know that potash in large amounts is necessary for bearing fruit trees. But they are very likely to delay its application until late in spring or sometimes un til midsummer, when th« young fruit is fast falling from the trees for lack of the material to form its seeds. Then it. is too late for the potash to do any good that season, or there is seldom rain enough after midsum mer to dissolve the potash and carry it within reach of the tree roots. The proper time to apply any kind of fertiliser to,an orchard is Jn the winter. Then the rains carry '".its soluble-portions into the soil. -. There is in every direction from a : vigorous tree such a network: of roots that there is no possibility of the fertilizer bf-ing washed away through the soil without being at some point taken up and being brought into tlie tree. It is best not to' use much 'stable man ore on orchards. It prcmotes large wood growth, but it is also likely to breed fu...

TWO COOKIES, [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 18 September 1896

TWO COOKIES, Their selections adjoined. Some work had been done; slab houses and bark sheds had been built, and a few acres on the ridge cleared and fenced; but the initial energy had waned and the joy of grubbing and splitting on their own land departed. Any reason was now good enough for adjourning the planned improvements. It was quite a month since Steve started to grub the big ironbark be hind the shed. This day he began with a brave heart; got down among the roots and into the hole as large as a tank ; dug tediously at the red clav that covered the black-snake roots, jabbed at the stones that blunted his tools, the lace o£ fibres that barred his way, till at last he was able to use the axe effectively to sever one more of the giant's claws. But the sound of the axe roused Abe, who in the next pad dock had been regarding a broken fence with an uneasy feeling that he ought to mend that "some day." With his hands in the. top of his pants he strolled over to where Steve was workin...

NEW EXPERIMENTS IN BUG WARFARE. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 25 September 1896

NEW EXPERIMENTS II* BUG W VIIFARE. To the experimenting of different unbh'xls bv which to destroy insect p ;st.s anl plane diseases affecting our orchard* a'id gardens there is no end ; and it is well that it is so, for to this spirit of investigation we owe all the remedies at present enjoyed' by 7 the horticulturist for the eradication of his foes. Of late experiments have been made with Carbide Calcium as a scale destroyer, but without success. Some attempts h ive also been made with steam as a 'Instructive agent "worked" wiih tents 1ih« Naiiie as with the hydro cyanic acid gas remedy.' He then proposed to strike out "all house holders," &c., and substitute "the pur poses Ret out in the petition and ap proved by the Treasurer." It had been pointed out to be unfair to make till the householders, shareholders in a public hoiwo. Mr. Asli supported the amendment as it removed difficulties.
