Intelligence in Cattle. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 7 July 1896

Intelligence in Cattle. Youatt, in his work on cattle, mentions the following wellauthenti cated story of a bull which showed almost human sagacity : — ' A gentle man in Scotland, near Laggan, had a bull which grazed with the cows in the open meadows. As fences were scarcely known in those parts a boy was kept to watch, lest the cattle should trespass on the neigh bouring fields and destroy the grain. The boy was fat and drowsy, and was often found asleep ; he was, of course, chastised whenever the cattle tres passed. Warned by this, he kept a long switch, and with it revenged himself upon the cattle with an un sparing hand if they exceeded their boundary. The bull seemed to have observed with conoern this consequence of their transgression, and, as he had no horns, he used to strike the cows with his large forehead, and thus punish them severely if any of them crossed the boundary. In the meantime he set them a good example himself, never once straying beyond the forbidden bounds, ...

The "Woolly Festival." 1896 EDITION. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 7 July 1896

The ' Woolly Festival,' 1896 EDITION. The sheep show is over, and the annual stud sheep sales are on. As soon after they are finished as possible we shall publish our annual record in the form of the ' Woolly Festival.' So many complimentary remarks have been made about it in past years that all we need say is that we are trying to improve upon previous efforts. A series of illus trated articles by Mr. R. McMillan will form part of the work ; and it will contain not only a full record of the sheep show and the prize winners thereat, together with a complete account of every transaction at the stud sheep sales, but also a record of the many important conferences and gatherings that bid fair to make the period of the '96 annual stud sheep sales to be remembered by pas toralists. The price of the book will be as usual — one shilling — and we shall be glad to receive orders and stamps or postal notes as early as you please at this office.

Gawarra Wines in England. REPORT by MR. .HUDSON, the^tckiwivldged Wine Expert of London. CCOF'Y'-] \6 Philpot Lane, Eastcheap, London, 23RU January, 1896. H. J. LINDEMAN, Esq., Sydney. ; Dear Sir, — I have tested the three samples submitted, and in response to your request that I should repeat my opinion, as ;' already expressed to you in writing, I have to say that some good few years ago I was called lo report upon the wines of New South Wales to the representative of your Government, and that report, T believe, is one of the Government papers. While always holding a high opinion of their possibilities, indeed their probabilities, 1 may say, judging from your samples, their success is now pretty well assured. 1 understand you to say that your ' Cawarra Wines ' can be retailed at 30s. per dozen. In my opinion they are of remarkably good value at this price. All your samples are in excellent condition, and the quality and style of the wines much in advance of any I have seen before,...

Gossip. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 7 July 1896

Gossip. The other day, dear gossips, I came across a few lines that set me to think ing. They were these, — ' I sang a song for the world to hear, It rose and fell, and reached no listening ear. I sang again, for my heart alone ; The earth resounded with the mighty tone.' Now I can't sing, never could, and never will, in this world ; but I write, and it seems to me that if I dared to write some of the deep things I think. other hearts would answer to them : but you daren't always write what you think ! We are cow&rds, all of us, and we're bound by the blood-borne tradi tions of thousands of generations of stupid ancestors ; so that while we sing 11 Britons never, never shall be slaves ' we are yet the slaves of an intellectual despotism worse than African slavery. Many a time I want to ask a question, or discuss a point, and I don't dare to, because people will misunderstand me, and, good people, my own friends will rise and upbraid me. You wouldn't think I'm built that way,...

Bill in the Queensland Assembly. In the Queensland Assembly on Wednesday, Mr. Tozer moved the second reading of the Diseases in Stock Bill. He detailed the history of the tick pest, and eaid that the Govern ment were determined to do all that was possible to protect the meat in dustry of the colony. To this end pro vision would also be made in the bill for the eradication of pleuropneu monia. The second reading was carried on the voices. Pine Tree Sawdust as a Remedy. Brisbane, Wednesday. — Dr. Hunt, at Hughenden, has received a letter from Mr. H. W. Shaw, of Thargomin dah, on the subject of ticks. The letter states that the writer saw a number of dogs infested with ticks lay down in some pine-tree sawdust, and this caused a mass of ticks to fall off their bodies. He then, as an experi ment, rubbed a quantity of this saw dust over another dog infested with ticks, which instantly caused them to fall off. Dr. Hunt expresses the opinion that there may be some virtue in the remedy, eith...

Sheepbreeders' Show. A HUGE SUCCESS. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 7 July 1896

Sheepbreeders' Show. A HUGE SUCCESS. The second annual show of the New South Wales Sheepbreeders' As sociation was opened on Thursday last under the most favorable auspices. Thursday was confined to judging, and all the awards that were too late for our last issue will be found to-day. On Friday and Saturday, however, the show was thrown open to the general public, and many thousand people paid for admission. The sheep dog trials were a great attraction, as they ought to be The sagacity and almost human intelligence of the sheepdogs are mar vellous, and show how dumb animals can be trained if we only care to take the trouble with them. The Railway Commissioners kindly made conces sions on the railways and thousands of visitors from all parts of the colony, and hundreds from the neighboring colonies flocked to see the great show. In the first pavilion were to be seen the fat sheep for export for which the Minister tor Mines and Agriculture. Mr. Sydney Smith, offered a prize of 50 gui...

The Sheep Directors' Meeting. A CURIOUS MUDDLE. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 7 July 1896

The Sheep Directors' Meeting. A CURIOUS MUDDLE. The gathering of delegates last Saturday night was one of the finest examples ever seen of how not to do a thing. The delegates were there all right in very large numbers. ' The chairman of the convening board was also present, but there was no pro gramme ! Nobody had any definite scheme to propose, except such as was evolved from the necessities of the moment. There were nine several separate and distinct resolutions pro posed and about half-a-dozen amend ments. But there was nothing done ! Nothing could be done ! The hon. secretary had received no notices of motion ; there was nothing before the meeting except the dear old troubles that have been discussed over and over again for years past. Any meet ing of this description needs careful preparation and organisation, and the only sensible thing that can be done is to get a Central Executive Committee formed that will have the ear of the Government. Nothing ;else is worth attempting, ...

THE GOVERNMENT PRIZE. FAT SHEEP FOR EXPORT. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 7 July 1896

THE GOVERNMENT PRIZE. FAT SHEEP FOR EXPORT. This special prize, offered by the Minister for Mines and Agriculture, received a great amount of attention from the pastoralists and those in terested in the meat export trade. The competition was keen in the first two classes (6-tooth merino wethers and 4-tooth crossbred wethers), but the lambs exhibited in classes three and four were not sufficiently good to gain prizes. The following are the weights, alive and dead (hot weight), and also the weights of fat and skins. The sheep were judged in twos, that is, two sheep from each pen were weighed and killed and then com pared : ~ CLASS I. 1st prize, £15, for the best pen of 20 6-tooth Merino Wethers. Winners. — A. A. The Ram Sales. OPENING DAY. Yesterday (Monday) Messrs. Weaver and Perry opened the ball at the Wool Stores of the New Zealand Loan aad Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, in Bridge-street.
