MR. FLAXMAN. [Newspaper Article] — Southern Australian — 12 May 1840

MR. FLAXMAN. By letters received from the Cape, we are happy to inform our readers that Mr. Flaxman and family had arrived all safe on the 14th February in the Wil-   liam Lockerby. Mr. Flaxman and fa- mily were, however, subjected to the most severe suffering during their pas- sage from India to Cape Town, in con- sequence of the infamous conduct of the Captain. It appears that be al- most starved his passengers, and carried his barbarity so far as to nearly cause the death of Mrs. Flaxman. Fortu- nately however they arrived at the   Cape, when Mr. F. lost no time in laying his case before the proper au- thorities, who upon investigating the matter, compelled the Captain to return to Mr. Flaxman the whole of his pas-   sage money, amounting to £300,   and possession of the vessel was taken by the officer of a British man-of-war until the inhuman Captain complied with the decision. Mr. Flaxman and family sailed from the Cape for En...

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN INSURANCE COMPANY. [Newspaper Article] — Southern Australian — 12 May 1840

SOITH AUSTRALIAN INSURANCE COM- PANY. WE rejoice to say, that a commence ment has at length been made towards the formation of the above important establishment. During the past week no less a sum than £50,000, nas been subscribed towards the forwarding of this object. The operations will, we understand, commence on the first of June. The desirableness, and utility, of such an institution are too «obvions to require them to be pointed out. lt is pleasing to observe that this insti tution is supported by the whole of the -mercantile community, arrd that it nu m bers among its shareholders, almost evury respectable and influential in dividual in and near Adelaide. This does not look tike retrogression in our colonial affairs.
