A cable states that Sacco, the fasting man, has concluded a forty five day3' fast at Henglors. He lost four stone in weight, and at the expiration of his task was very weak. He contemplates entering upon another forty days' fast in April. A murder was committed at Roeburno (W.A.) on Saturday, when a Chinaman cook at the Commercial Hotel beat in the head of a Siamese waiter with a lump of firewood. Maplevillc is a lovely place, quite a bit larger than Appletown, and they raise fine fruit and vegetables which they ship to many parts of the country the demand being so great that we do not have much of them at our boarding house .which ii run by the school. We have quite plain stuff to cat which I sup pose is good for us and keeps us from having boils which are a great inconvenience.- Still you can't expect the very best board for three dollars a week where they have to make some money on it too although if you have coffee it is twenty-five cents a week extra. I am not one of the coffee scholars, and they sit atanother table which I do not think is so much to be proud of...

The Problem of the Boy. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 10 March 1906

The Problem of the Boy. The didiculty of obtainingeniploy mqnt for boys in trades in New South Wales represents in aggra vated form the troubles a State sometimes creates for itself. That the coining man should have a vocation, and bo trained and elli cient in it, is one of the things most essential to the stable pros perity of a community, and tho individual thus .equipped may be described for the purpose of com parison as the opposite. of a clerk. Tho clerk is a necessary worker, and in some cases a skilled one, but the '.majority of tho class do work that only calls for ability to write a fair round hand and ac quaintance with the R's, and as this intellectual outfit is very widely possessed it follows that the supply of such labor, always exceeds the demand for it. A condition that is bad enough thus produces itself voluntarily. But how much worse must it be, and how much lower must the standards of living and industrialism fall, when public policy deliberately aims at fostering...
