To Make a Happy Home. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

. To Make a Happy Home. Learn to govern yourselves and to be gentle and patient. Guard your tempers, especially in seasons of ill ihealth, irritation and trouble, and soften them by prayers and a sense of your own shortcomings and *errors. Never speak or act in anger until you have prayed ?over your words or acts. Remember that, valuable as is the gift of speech, ssilence is often more valuable. Do not expect too much from others, bit remember that all have an evil nature whose development we ?must expect, and that we should forbear and forgive, as we often desire forbearance and forgiveness ourselves Never retort a sharp or angry word. It is the second ?word that makes the quarrel. Beware of the first disagreements. Learn to speak in a gentle tone of voice. Learn to say kind and pleasant things whenever opportunity offers. Study the characters of each, and sympathise with all in their troubles however small. Do not neglect little things if they can effect the comfort of others in t...

Tribute to Lord Rothschild. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

Tribute to Lord Rothschild. In London they refer to a graceful tribute which it is proposed to pay to the Head of the House of Roths child. The new wing shortly to be added to the Jews' Free School will be named after him, and the fund which is being raised for the purpose will at the same time serve to mark the ctmmunity's sense of its in debtedness to Lord Rothschild lor his untiring devotion to public interests. A happier idea it would be impos sible to conceive. Naturally, it has been taken up with acclamation. The community gladly hails the first opportunity that has been afforded ir of evincing its grateful appreciation of the innumerable benefits which the House of Rothschild have conferred upon the Jews of England. Never is a public movement set on foot but the distinguished Head of this House is among the first to be approached, and never is an appeal which has anything to recommend it left unanswered. But one does not like to be for ever receiving favours. The community no...

The Quest for Gold in Alaska. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

The Quest for Gold in Alaska. The Klondike is a great magnet. It is drawing men from all quarters. It is said that the best business j on the Pacific coast now is steamboats. Vessels that . have been practically condemned for years have been refitted, and are earning large sums for their owners in the Klondike trade. The invading army of miners and ?nmsnprtnrs is made nn of men not onlv from our own country, but from foreign countries as well. It is said that an army of five-thousand Japanese labourers is being gathered together, and that within a month these men wiU begin their descent upon Dawson City. They will be brought ovtr in a Japanese vessel, and as they will not land on the soil of the United States, there will be no one to deny them entrance unless. Great Britain intei feres. The majority of these Japanese will come from Hawaii, and will receive about the same pay as they have been receiving as labourers under contract in Hawaii. A Japanese syndicate is launching this Klo...

Dinner to Mr. Louis H. Nathan. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

Dinner to Mr. Louis H. Nathan. On Saturday evening about 40 of the principal em ployees of Messrs. S. Hoffnung and Co. entertained at dinner, at the Trocadero Cafe, Mr. Louis H. Nathan, the head of that firm, who, after a sojourn of about 18 months in the colony, is returning with his wife and daughter to London by the Australia. Mr. Percy L. Benjamin occupied tha chair. The health of the guest was proposed by Mr. Phillip Benjamin, who said that Mr. Nathan's advent had undoubtedly given an impetus to the business and a stimulus to its emolovees. H-» rtferred to the many excellent business qualifications that gentleman possessed as well as to the geniality of his character, which combined to render him so much of a favouri e with all those with whom he cime in contact. The toast was drunk with musical honours and many cheers. Mr. Nathan, in responding, ex pressed the great pleasure he felt at meeting the employees on that occasion, and his recognition of the heartiness with which all...

A Song of The Passover. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

A Song of The Passover. He hath triumphed. We have conquered. They are sunk beneath the wave ; How the mighty waters parted For the passage of the slave ! All the counties.* best of Egypt Lies rotting in the sea, And the downtrod Hebrew children Are free — we are free ! Oh. the hand of the Eternal Is a mighty hand to save ! He hath stretched it forth — delivered The oppressed, afflicted slave. And overwhelmed his rash pursuers In the waters of the sea. Give Him praise, ye hosts, forever ; We are free — we are free ! O 'twas joy to see them perish In that deep and briny grave ! What avail their horse aud chariot — Their warriors strong and brave — 'Gainst the power of Jehovah, Who hath plunged them in the sea 1 And brought His chosen people ? i o dry land, safe and free 1 Selina Seixas Solomon, in Ji. Standard. Often we are tempted to say, I made no progress. Now look when the sea is coming in ; you will think there is no advance. Look again later on, and the whole ocean is near. Pra...

Public Opinion. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

Public Opinion. There is something positively ludicrous in the as .-.umption of many persons of both sexes in society that they are high'y well-informed because they read all the novels of any note that come out. Of course to do this involves a certain amount of indus ry, but it does not necessarily involve any intelligent and critical discrimination, and it requires no great capacity to read a given numb r pages of fiction. A large part of the ' literary ' talk in society consists of reference to novels, and manv a nerson of genuine native wit and sound understanding is undervalued because he or she is not crammed with tbis fiction's lore and glib o speech in relation to it. There is a wide field of readf ing besides novels which does requiie capacity, an - those who are familiar with it are not apt to have d cart-load of novels, good, bad, indifferent, at theia tongues end. Properly considered, acquaintance witr novels indicates nothing one way or the other in thh matter of intell...

The Boy as a Critic. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

The Boy as a Critic. The results of an inspection of the literary lists of four public schools, as tabulated acd analysed a short time since, are not only inter esting, but decidedly reassuring. The names of the first six authors in their order of popularity, are Henty, Ainswoith, Haggard, Marryat, Jul s Verne, and ' Ballantyuo the Brave,' as he was generously styled by E. L. Stevenson, who, by the way, does not find a place even in the first twenty. There are. other surprises, however, for apart from the high honors won by Ains worth, it is strang.eut6find James Grant and Edna Lyell following hard on the tracks of the first half a dozen, while Scott is sixteenth, Mark Twain, even, below Stevenson ; Thackeray and Lever nowhere ; and Barrie, Beaconsfield, and Anthony Trollope tying for the wooden spoon at the bottom of the list! Of course statistics are notoriously deceptive. Besides, at many public schools, and very probably at the four selected in this experiment, in addition to th...
