OPENING OF TIE RAILWAY. A GREAT DEMONSTRATION. GATHERING OF THE CLANS. Tho ambition of residents of 40 years' standing was realised on Thursday, 28th ult. Alexandra at last saw the iron, horse puffing into her township, and the means of direct railway communication with the metropolis brought within her grasp. This means much if proper use is made of the great and varied rcources of the district. The demonstration inaugurated by the presi dent and councillors of the shire, backed up as. it was by the ratepayers and the younger generation of the district, was a fltting climax to the strenuons exertions that have been put" forth by' both public and private citizens for so many years past. Important. Concerning some parts of the district news comes but seldom. This is not the fault of the Editor, for he has no miracu lous power of knowing what is happening in all the area of circulation. It is the fault of residents in the silent places. Will some man or woman take the matter in hand and cause the silence to cease ? If no one else is doing it for your:dis. triet will YOU try on these lines? Send accounts of public and social events in your township or neighborhood, such as weddings, deaths, accidents, con certs, matters touching the industries, etc. Write your name in some corner; not for printing, but for good f iith. Write the names of persons very dis tinctly. Do vot bother about grammsr or spelling; it is the Editor's work to look after these trifles. The barest skeleton is enough. Write on one side of the paper only. Give information but lqt criticism aRe l- . I

Treat strangers with the utmost courtesy and hospitality, so that they may take away good impressions of it. Gobur Hospital Concert. "-4-- The inlhbitants turned out in great nunm T\drs on the 22nd ulit., and thoroughly en joyed a tip-top musical entertainment anld dance. The programmo arranged by Mr. Jas. RAILWAY AGITATION REMINISCENCES. "A FORTY YEARS' WAR." AN INTERESTING EPITOME. (No. 7). Of course the Minister was only reitera' tine the ignorant views of the departmental staff as to the supposed cost of the line. The value of the expert knowledge then given to 'Ministers can nlow be accurately - guaged by the amount THE LINE HAS ACTUALLY COST And the fact that it has been almost entirely constructed by unskilled labor. The Mbinister moreover played an unenviable Spart by omitting such lines as the Alexan dra extension from his Bill, and committing that unpardonable job of constructing the Pascoe Vale line merely to placate the un employed of Melbourne, who would not leave the city. At the local agricultural show, held in December of the same year, enmong the visitors present were M1cesra 3illius, Tucker, Cameron, Graves and M'lenzie, Ml's.P.
