• Sheep Sales. Messrs. Macarthur &. Macleod; of 612-616 Collins Street, Melbourne, re port: Fat Sheep.-At Newmnarket on Tues. day there were approximately 26,000 sheep. The demand through out was good, particularly for the better classes. The highest price ob tained was 35/10, being for the tops of a large line of sheep forwarded by an owner who sends large consign ments to this centre weekly. Good crossbred wethers sold from 25/ to .27/, lighter grades 20/ to 23/ Wyith shorn wethers from 19/ to 21/9. Cuthbertson, a former member of the Legislative Assembly, a .,prbnoinent. business' and • racing. man, died in a private hospital in Melbourne oni TJuly 4 after a short illness. Mr. Cuthbertson.,nad large business interests, and wais a direct tor of several companies. Mr. Cuth -bertson :took a keen interest in hunt ing. He was secretary of tihe Findon Harriers for many years, and for the last two years was master of hounds for. the Club. He owned many good hunters, and ,usually had a steeple chaser or a hurdler in training as well as lbunters. The best horses oiwned by hint in recent years were Blankwyn, Carriole, Jehu, Dellanius, Tettcott and Ample Cap. With these horses he won'many races. He is survived by a widow and one soil, Alan. Price Hall on Monday evening, July. 8 it was ar ranged to begin a St. John First -Aid Class towards the end of the month> About 30 ladies were present and nearly all enrolled at once, but it is hoped that many more will dnrol"be fore-the class begins. There has been great anticipation as to the results of the Home Nurs ing examination.- These are to hand, the percentage of passes being very high, and a great credit to Mrs. Fletcher who hashnad, charge of the class. At the. close of the mneeting, the President of the Red. Ci-oss Branch (Mrs. Petrie) speaking on behalf, of the class, thanked Mrs. Fletcher for the extra tuition at. heri home on many occasions, then asked Mrs. F. Price to hand over a small gift of ,a Swan fountain pen, fromn the ladies .Mrs. Price,.in a fewv words, upheld Mrs. Petrie's remarks, and urged the class to "Carry On." COURSING EPPING CLUB About 30 members and friends of the Epping Coursing Club gathered at the Victoria Hotel, Epping, on Sat urday evening last on the occasion of the first smoke social conducted by. the club. Throughout the evening the same social spirit which has been respon sible for the club's past success pre vailed, and as a result the club is con fident of obtaining more members. Mr. L. Devlin capably officiated as chairmani, whilst excellent entertain ment was provided by Messrs Ken Mountain (comedian), , Harcourt French (entertainer), and Harry Davey (mello piano). Mr. T. Doran, in proposing the toast of bthe 6`club; congratulated members on the evening providedand wished the club' every success. Mr. L. Devlin ip reply, pointed out' that the club was essentially to provide social outings. "We may not have the quantity of dogs racing with us," he said, "but we certainly have the quality." £25,000 GOVERNMENT CONTRACT Mr. F. V. Squire, of Briar Hill, has obtained a Government contract to elect buildings at Point Cook in con- nection with the Empire Air Scheme at a cost of £25,000. Anxious to keep as much of this money as possible in the Greensbor- ough, Eltham and Whittlesea districts, Mr. Squire is anxious to obtain carpen- ters, laborers, plumbers and painters living in these districts, and is offer- ing liberal wages. ELTHAM COUNCIL NEWS i ENGINEER'S REPORT The Shire Engineer (Mr. C. L. Tin gate) presented his report as follows: Country Roads Board. - Patrol maintenance is being carried out on all main roads. The earthwork on the Arthur's Creek contract is now completed, and gravelling is now being carried out. The contractor has signed up for the contract on the Dixon's Creek Road, and intends to start immedi ately. The Country Roads .Board has agreed to carry out work on the Healesville-Yarra :Glen, Rd by day labour, and a start has been made Applications have been invited for the position of patrolman at King lake and many applications have been received. - Mr. A.
