COLONIAL AND INTERCOLONIAL MELBOURNE. SATURDAY, July 24. A tremendous sensation wag cnuscd Inst night in the Italian Opera House during the performance of " Lee Hugcnots." A man named Greer, who was in the dress-circle, suddenly dis charged his revolver, wounding bis wife and a Frenchman named Soudry, who was sitting beside her. He then fired the weapon at bis own heart, and fell mortally wounded. Jealousy is said to be the cause of the tragedy. The Waterloo Cup was won by Springwater. The fallowing telegrams appeared in our western edition of Saturday afternoon last :~ LONDOK, July 19. Intelligence has been received from Manilla that serious earthquakes were experienced there yesterday. The shock was felt for a considerable distance. There was no loss of life but great dam age was done to property. LONDON, July 20. A COLD, bleak wind swept across the Downs in front of the oldest sporting town in the west, as we approached it on the evening of the 20th insL, intent on taking stock of lion matters sporting were conducted in Tambo. A glance to the right and left as we drew up at the Commercial did not reassure us that the morrow would be pregniuit with any amount of extraordinary excitement, but in this matter we had evidently reckoned with out due inquiry, for after cvcnta proved that a clever descendant of the House of Israel had arrived on a money gathering mission, and the polite way in which lie endeavored to prevent reckless people from parting with their money has established a debt of grati tude which "mountains of silver" could not at present repay, but which as time rolls on may lead people to suppose that the liabili ties occurred may be liquidated in kind on a future occasion.
