THE [?] and Murray Advertiser. PUBLISHED DAILY. SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 1857. CO-OPERATION AND MINING SKILL. [Newspaper Article] — Ovens and Murray Advertiser — 14 March 1857

TilS iVSft ®y£Vttscr. PUBLISHED DAILY. SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 1857. CU-OVKR..TION AND MINING SKILL. As the auriferous resouiccs of this district are developed, and our diggers in their active search after the preciou; metal are driven from the bank and shallow creek sinkings into the bed9 of creeks at gradually increasing distance from their souice, they are compelled to work in deeper and wetter ground, and median c.d agency of a combined and complicated character is required to carry on the works. We have seen this change moic particularly marked in the onward progress of the digging* on the Woolshed Creek. As the claims extend..d down the crcek the difficulty and expense of working them by means of the huge paddock system become gradually more apparent, and it was only when failure after failure on the til Dorado hud convinced the owners of the claims there of the necessity of working upon some other method, that oven praciiciil meu ceased to ridicule the idea that the ground should...

The mining districts of Cornwall have alwuys been considered the most famous in the world, und the immense yield of metals und minerals from that county, art) not to bo imputed iu u.u annals of hiitory; it i* now a well known tact, that the metalliferous re source-; of Cornwall have b;en i:i con stmt work since the tim;» o'' Dindoriis Kicidus, who wrote in the time of Julius Cirsnr, about sixty years It. C., and at the present period the mines in the various districts are being prosecuted with great vigour, and many of them are yielding large and handsome re turns to their enterprising and spirit?.! proprietors. Within a short tiim of the last century, the only ores obtained was tin ore from the streams or allu vial deposits, and that much in the same way in which the alluvial gold is found in our gold-fields, viz., iu the beds of creeks and rivers.
