MY LADY'S FRENCH GRANDSON. Continued. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 15 February 1879

MlY LADY'S FRENCH GRAIND, , SON. Costinued. The, thing is explained in five minutes, said the benevolent-looking lawyer-benevolent because he had suffered in life, and had been sorely dis *appointed. Here is how it is. The law of France lays it down that no French minor can marry on foreign soil unless he or she has made the regular lei declarations. Your son and this /lady were married, or at all esentse p?ased through the ceremony of marriage, at the English Embassy at is?l (which is held at French law t Ybe English ground), without these .~ lI declaratiops being made, and therefore, by French law, they were not married. On the other hand, by E?glish law, the English courts have so jurisdiction, .foe it would be held that the English Embassy in Paris was only English ground as affecting matters in France, and that as the lady was not a naturalized English woman, the marriage can only be judged by French law, which has decided against b@r.-as unquestionably upon all these legal gro...

"THE COTTON STRIK?TfN sh;.'.z:, LANCASHIRE. (FROM THE TbIMES, NOv, 26.) "'The intelligence that capital and ]q?tour are again at war in Lancashire will not tend to raise the hopes of those who have been looking anxiously for a revival of trade and industry in England. The master cotton-spinners of Oldham gave notice some time ago they would reduce the wages of their ;orkpeople by 10 per cent., and though in compliance with the ripresentation of the mayor and other personages of local influence they have consented to make the present re irction only 5 per cent., the majority of them have held firmly to their resolution that a reduction there must be. The period of notice expired yesterday, and the operatives on their side, beteg equally determined not to yi d, have turned out on strike in large numbers. One hundred mills, employing 12,000 workpeoplo, have thus been stopped, but the suspension of industry in Oldham is by. no means universal. Several old established firms have hesitate...
