THE WHEAT MARKET . [Newspaper Article] — Prairie Farmer — 1 August 1845

THE WHEAT MARKET . As a general rule , the farmer should market his produce the same year of its production . If ho have an abundance of capital , so that he can store over from year to year till there shall be a time of scarcity , and tlten take advantage of public calamity , he willunqueslionably make money . But there arc few farmers in the West able to do this , and the proceeds of their wheat crop thcy . * oecd to pay their years expenses . If they do not sell now , they will . cxpect to sell next winter or spring , to pay . debts meanwhile accumulating . And those who can thresh and market their wheat soon as well as by and by , if they do not , are delaying for an increased price . Unless there should bo some unforeseen calamity , as a war , er a short crop next , year , they will mistakV their calculations . If they really think it best not to sell , in expectation of a short crop , they will be careful about wasting their seed by sowing j arid foir the farmer to hold on in ...

COLMANS . EUROPEAN AGRICULTURE . , i -J-- - j-.- ^ iis * ¦( , ,- - > ¦¦ • ¦• $ ! Mr . Colman ^ evoe 8 achapter to an account of visits to Be ^ efal- of the agricultural schools of Ireland . These accounts are interesting ; , as aflbrdipg light upon the . character pnd habits of the people , and as evidence of present and promise of future improvement ; but if they are offered as patterns for us , or even as affording any indication of proper education in this countiy , we shall dissent in tolo . The schools seem founded with aims considerabl y different from each other ; but the education afforded in most of them is agricultural , and that in the strictest sense of the term . The object seems only to teach boys to make ditch , drain lands , raise turnips , feed cows , sheep , & c ; but what wc call education—instruction in princi p les / mental training—seems wholl y left out of the account , or to occupy a very . . subordinate position : in other words , tlic...
