"IN THE SWEAT OF THY FACE " . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 October 1879

IN THE SWEAT OF THY FACE . REACHING the end of the corn row , the black Upturned soil the entangled wild weeds Covering deep , the unclouded celestial fire Unremittingly , kindly its deeds Performing , the farmer and youth on his plow As when tired on the framework reclining , Was quietly gazing and saw from the ground A right beautiful vision arising . Like spires of Gothic churches old , But crystal as icebergs tail , There rose from dewless grass with bold Undaunted move , a ball , That like a frozen dewdrop seemed A steeple top adorning , Whose long symmetric form appeared As western showers at morning . The grass moved sideways , stirred as if A wedge were moving it ; The spires were being lifted high On roofs with sunlight lit , With shingles colored as arching rainbows are , And corniced round with a snowy , glittering bar . And farther rising , looming large it shone Cathedra ] shaped , in beauty standing lone As desert flowers Afric s glowing sands Relieving , as mosses str...

> «^ p VISIT TO THE ORFANS' HOME . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 October 1879

> «^ p VISIT TO THE ORFANS HOME . THIS INSTITUTION , with its appurtenances , stands by itself somewhat over a mile N . N . E . from Normal , and nearly four miles from Bloomington . It is a neat structure of four stories , the first of which is stone , the others brick . It fronts the south . Just behind the home is a chimney tal enough for a good-sized mil . Entering the front doorway , a pleasant middle-aged lady , elegantly drest , met me , and invited me to an easy chair in the richly furnisht reception room . This lady is Mrs . Orr , who superintends the Home . From her I learned that it was establihed ten years ago by the State , as a home for the orfans of the soldiers of Illinois , —contains at present about 320 children , is under the managemant of a board of trustees and under her direct supervision . Following the girl with the bunch of keys , I was first shown the little girls dormitory a room about 16 x 24 , containing ten double beds , arranged in rows alon...

ELOQUENCE AND COLLEGE ORATIONS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 October 1879

ELOQUENCE AND COLLEGE ORATIONS . I HAVE READ and heard about eloquence and eloquent men but I must confess I have heard very little that seemed eloquent to me . I have heard few persons of whose speeches I could say that I believed them ; that made me think and feel as their author seemed to think and feel . And I have found this to be the case with so-called orations , which I had been led to believe were but another name for eloquence . I believe an oration to be an address delivered with the . intention of producing the thoughts and feelings of the speaker in the minds of his hearers ; to influence the will . This is the idea of Rhetoric , and , it seems to me , is warranted by what are known as masterp ieces . The great orations of Cicero , Demosthenes , Pitt , Burke , Henry , Clay , and Webster were delivered with the view to convince their hearers and to lead them to some definite action . They spoke for or against some principle , act , or sentiment . They spoke , not merely ...

THEGIRONDINS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 October 1879

THEGIRONDINS . THE REVOLUTION of 93 , or the Great Revolution as it is sometimes called , gave birth to many political parties . In the Reign of Terror party after party came to power . Many of them obtained authority , not by peaceful measures , but by sending to the scaffold all who opposed them . From 178 9 until the death of Robespierre in 1794 Paris was in the hands of the mob , and Paris ruled France . Therefore the party which by the eloquence of its orators , or the cruelty of its leaders , gained control of the mob , held in its hands tyrannical power . But there were a few parties , who served by their virtue and heroic labor to lessen the gloom of this revolution . The one that grasped the helm at the beginning of the great struggle , when the revolutionists were moderate in their designs , will be praised by mankind for its attempted work for the good of France , honored for its struggle against anarchy , and pitied for its tragic fate . It was the party of the Girondins...

NATIONAL HYMNS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 October 1879

NATIONAL HYMNS . THERE HAS always been to me something mystical about the influence of music over man . All the laws that I have ever read in Physics can never explain to me how strains of music that we love , vibrate along every neive of our bodies , touch our souls and move our wills . Richard Grant White has claimed that there is no poetry in music , but only a jarring of sounds . Let the philosopher explain , if he can , upon this basis , some of the scenes of the world s past that my history pictures to me . However , the few words I have to say are not about music itself ; but about it in relation to national life and history . All through the past , nations have had their songs , and these songs have always been , equally with the nations flag , preservers of union . You will find in your Bible that Moses , when he had finished giving the laws to the children of Israel , wrote for them a song : in order , he said , that when in strange lands , among strange people and strange...

EDITORIAL . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 October 1879

EDITORIAL . OUR FIRST . —It is with no little uneasiness that we begin this , our first editorial . Possibly we might have become discouraged at the work before us , if it were not tor the pleasing prospect which the ILLINI has for this year . No debts , ready contributors and cheering words on all sides are enough to make any editor s heart thrill with pleasure ; and make him feel that more than common difficulties must be met , in order to be insurmountable . It is with these feelings that we greet the students , old and new , and hope that this year will be as pleasant to them as former ones have been to us . The older students understand , and we hope that we can impress upon the new ones , the the fact , that the ILLINI is in every respect , the students paper . It is of the students , by the students and for the students . To make a college journal a complete success , three things are necessary : first , good management ; second , liberal contributions ; third , unbounded sub...
