Woman and Her Domain [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 April 1896

Woman and Her Domain STOIIY OF THE LILIES OP THE VALLEY . o When the dusk steals over the meadows . And the cattle are all asleep , , - When naught is heard but the cricket s chirp , Then the elves and fairies creep From their homes in the . nooks and crannies , And , while glowworm torches flame , They tell to their own little children ^ How the valley lilies came . One morning , they say , while the fairies . Were holding their revels high , The dear little elves , their servants , Lingered / while passing by , Each hanging the while , on a blade of grass , The cups which this elfin crew Each morning-brought , to seek for the queen Her usual draught of dew . They lingered awhile , unmindful of time , • Watching the . fairies play , Their queen forgot , till the morning sun Had driven the dew away ; And the cups they had thoughtlessly laid aside , As they let the moments pass , In the morning sun they found each one Was fast to its blade of grass . Arid then there was lamentation ,...

INSECT PESTS OF THE HOUSE -HOLD . —IL (¦¦¦¦ MaMSM f [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 April 1896

INSECT PESTS OF THE HOUSEHOLD . —IL (¦¦¦¦ MaMSM f By Prof . W . G . Johnson , University of Illinois . CLOTHES MOTH . Many a drawer , box or trunk full of woolen clothes , furs , or feathers , has been packed in the spring of the year in good condition , but when opened and unpacked in the fall have been found to have been riddled by the larvae of the clothes moth . The parents of these larvae are small ,, light-brown moths , and can be seen flying about the house earr ly in May . The female , when ready to deposit her eggs , works her way into dark comers and into the folds of garments , apparently choosing by instinct the least inconspicuous places From these eggs hatch the soft , whitebodied larvae , each one of which begins immediately to make a case for itself from the fragments of the cloth upon which it feeds . They enlarge Jtheir cases by adding new material to either end , and by goreing the sides . ; The larvae reach maturity as ; winter approaches , when they crawl to som...

Our Young Folks Corner -A LITTLE APRIL MAIDEN . L . C . Mosey . I know a dear little maiden , She s only three years old , Her eyes are blue as summer skies , Her hair like fine-spun gold . * l Her lips are like twin rosebuds red , .-. ¦ And , peeping out between , Whenever , she is smiling , The pearly teeth are seen . , ; She s a winsome little maiden , And sweet as she can be , And we love her , O , so dearly ! Our little maid of three . r She s a little April maiden ; Her moods , the w . hole day long , Have as many variations As a medley in a song . For now she s gay , and then she s sad , While -ousy at Her play . Like the changing light and shadow Of a sweet , young April day . Arid-now , she laughs , arid then she cries , And sometimes both together , Like the sunshine and the showers , In fickle April weather . She s a winsome little maiden , And sweet as she can be , And we love her , O , so dearly ! Our little maid of three . ABOUT TWO ELEPHANTS . About eighty years ago t...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 April 1896

BylfcDGAR , t * v 2 MC £ ^ £ lH . We are Ten Travelers . There is the Merry Traveler , the Morose Traveler , the Clerical Traveler , the Gipsy Traveler , the Chronic Traveler , the Casual Traveler , the Student Traveler , the Aimless Traveler , the Commercial Traveler , the Vagabond Traveler . How we came to know each other is no matter . We meet at times at my own apartments in a quaint old inn , beside a cavernous fireplace , into which countless now sightless eyes have for centuries peered , and in a pleasant way we re-live our pilgrimings , or recount those romances of others which have touched our hearts and tarried there . In this old room , with its brown rafters , decrepit floor and little , high dormer windows , like the portholes of an old frigate , we seem to become almost one in this kindly companionship . We are so much one that when my guests , have departed I sit here by the old fireplace , where friendly voices and presences linger , and set down as best I may the pl...

A SPOTTED DOG . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 April 1896

A SPOTTED DOG . This is one of Mr . Chauncey Depew s humorous dog stories : When I was about fourteen years old , said he , my father lived on the old farm up at Poughkeepsie . One day after I had fininshed a fiveacre field of corn my father let me go to town to see a circus . When in town I saw for the first time a spotted coach dog . It took my fancy , and I bought it and took it home . When father saw it his good old Puritan face fell . Why , Chauncey , he said sadly , we dont want any spotted dog on the farm . It would drive the cattle crazy . No , he wont , father , I said , he s tv blooded dog . The next day it was raining , and I toot the dog out in the woods to try him on a coon , but the rain was too much for him . It washed the spots off . That nightr I took the dog back to the dealer with ai long face . - Said I : Look at that dog , sir . The spots have all washed off . Great guns , boy ! exclaimed the dbgr dealer , there was an umbrella went with * that dog . Didnt you g...

BOOK _ REVIEW [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 April 1896

BOOK _ REVIEW GALLOPING DICK . By H . B . Marreott-Wat-son . Price , $ 1 . 25 . Chicago : Stone & Kimball . Richard Ryder —Sometime Gentleman of the Road , whose adventures are detailed in modern and attractive form under the above title , is one of the merriest rogues of fiction . His humor and versa tility are alike unparalleled . He pistols an importunate minion of the law , and makes love to a lady of the court the same hour , without suspicion of incongruity . In one of the most amusing chapters of his life , he holds up a high ecclesiastical functionary and compels him , & t the point of the pistol , to become an active participant in several daring highway robberies . The bishop , who has a keen sense of humor himself , is divided between rage , fear of detection and merriment at his own predicament . How the bishop got the better of Dick , how Dick dined with the . King , and many another merry tale , together with some that are blood curdling , we wi...

The Western Rural ALLEGED FUN [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 23 April 1896

The Western Rural ALLEGED FUN THOUGHT IT TOLD FORTUNES . Li Hung Chang , the famous Viceroy of China , has , left his native country for Russia , to . attend the ceremonies of the coronation of the czar at Moscow , May 24 , as the representative of his sovereign , and he K expects to return to China by way of -the United States , arriving in Washington , some time next fall . Until now the longest journey ever taken by the greatest man in China was to Japan , where he went last spring to make the treaty of peace . But he has been up and down the coast frequently , and is the largest owner in the China Mutual Steamship Company , which furnishes transportation facilities between Shanghai and Tien-Tsin . The captains of those steamers tell \ sOme very interesting stories concerning his superstitions and fear of the sea , and the old gentleman will doubtless have a sad time of it making the long journey through the Indian ocean and the Mediterranean to Marseilles . Gen . John W . Foster...
