The PROSPBt-tTT OF THE FARMER I [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 February 1909

The PROSPBt-tTT OF THE FARMER I ( Conclu ded from page five . ) Yes ; I -o- 4 « - » ember MWtliing luite so heavy in the y ield for many years . Now , Josiah , is there anything you can possibly complain of this year ? Well , I dunno , said Josiah . There s one serious drawback to ^ these big crops . You see , they make a terrible strain on the ground . The farmer of today Jias learned the great principle of insurance and the application of the adage , There is safety in numbers . Instead of depending entirely upon one or two crops , as was the custom among large farmers years ago , not only does he now raise a greater diversity of crops , but , with more intelligence , he rotates his crops , thus materially increasing the yield . THB F A-RMER OP THB FUTURE . The dignity as well as the profitable progress of agriculture will be maintained by the character and quality of men who manage the enterprise , and it is one of the hopeful signs of the times that this branch of industry is no...

Reeeeding Pasturee and Meadowa . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 February 1909

Reeeeding Pasturee and Meadowa . The best way to do this work is to put the seed under the sod . Broadcasting is not the proper method . The majority of our old pastures and meadows are sod-bound , or root-bound , and by using a good disc drill —one that is strictly up to date—the work of reseeding can be done to perfection . If the drill is of the proper construction , it will provide means for conducting the grass seed from the grass seeder through the grain tubes directly to tne bottom of the furrows made by the discs without turning or injuring the sod . The Kentucky Disc Drill , manufactured by The American Seeding-Machine Co ., Incorporated , Richmond , Ind ., will do this work in the most excellent manner . The sod is relieved of its bound condition , and the seed placed underneath the sod , where it belongs . In a few days after this work has been done the sod settles back to its place , and it would take sharp eyes to see the marks made by the discs . The best time to do th...

STUDY OF WEEDS HEW COURSE FOR FARMERS [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 February 1909

STUDY OF WEEDS HEW COURSE FOR FARMERS In a determination to educate the farmers of the state as well as their sons the Iowa State Agricultural College has prepared and has ready to send out cases giving samples of all the weeds , weed sends , economic plants and their seeds and the bugs and insects of the state that are injurious to crops , together with Information concerning them , so that the farmers may inform themselves . Professor Holden of the State College , who has taken a leading part in the plan to have agriculture taught in the country schools , has lectured much to teachers institutes , at which he outlines the work of teaching agriculture , and he has always at such times pointed out that the foundation on which to teach agriculture is a knowledge of all the plants and insects of the state . Along this line , knowing that many farmers are totally unable to identify many of the seeds and insects of the state , the college has prepared these cases . There are about 500 c...

THE FARMERS' FORUM [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 February 1909

THE FARMERS FORUM WHERE THE SCHOOL TEACHER ERRS Editor Farm Press : Johnny , you get a good education and you won t have to be a farmer . This idea , inculcated by rural teachers , has made many a good lawyer , good doctor , politician , business man , and , no doubt , some presidents of the United Stares , but it has never made a good farmer . The inculcating of these principles has been involuntary and has been assisted by the parents of the school children and by the neighborhood . A boy who has been quick to learn and considered the best boy ih the school is never looked upon as a future farm boy . Seventy-five per cent of the rural school teachers come from the village and city high-schools , with no ideas of farming or farm life , and in many cases they belittle the idea of farm life , not from any general purpose , but because it is their idea of showing their education . Until the country schools can be equipped with country teachers that will by their influence and line of ...

ORCHARD AND GARDEN [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 February 1909

ORCHARD AND GARDEN SPRAYING FOR CURCULIO A wealth of apple-tree spraying information was given by J . C . Blair , of the University of Illinois , in a letter to Mr . E . F . Stephens , of Crete , Neb ., which reads as follows : Dear Sir : In 1903 and 1904 , Professor Crandall , of our department of horticulture here , made an extensive study of the life , history and habits of curculios , and conducted spraying experiments looking to the control of the pest . As a result of his studies , he found that by far the most efficient way to combat curculio was surface cultivation of the ground from three to four times between July 10 th and August 10 th . At this time 87 per cent of the curculios were found to be in the pupa stage in the ground , at depths ranging from one-half inch to two inches below the surface . It was found that the curculios in this stage are very readily killed by exposure to sunlight and air . Spraying experiments have not been found to be uniformly successful . Wh...
