THE BERKSHIRE OUTLOOK FOR 1911 [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
THE BERKSHIRE OUTLOOK FOR 1911 The opinion of large and small breeders . Read these letters and see what others think of the Berkshire . Send in your letter for publication in the February issue . The Berkshire Outlook Is a Bright One . Bel Air , Md . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —When I received your letter asking me to write about the Berkshire outlook , there immediately came into my mind the first lines of a hymn , with which most persons are familiar : Watchman , tell us of the night , What its signs of promise are . Traveler , oer yon mountain s height , See that glory-beaming star . Naturally you wonder what connection this quotation has with the Berkshire Outlook . Clearly it is riot inappropriate . The first two lines are a distinct paraphrase of your request for information , and the last two may be appropriately applied to Berkshire breeders as a class , and to the present outlook of the Berkshire business , for all Berkshire breeders are , or sho...
THE AMERICAN BERKSHIRE CONGRESS [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
THE AMERICAN BERKSHIRE CONGRESS Columbus , Ohio , February 7 th and 8 th From the Secretary of the Con gress . Thurston , Ohio . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —The time was , when each individual farmer and stock raiser was , and could be , independent of every other farmer or stock raiser , except on a very few occasions . Today it is different : times have changed , and unless there Is hearty co-operation in all lines , the possibility of success is reduced to the minimum . The Berkshire Breeders of the country realized this a few years ago , and with the result that there exists the American Berkshire Congress , to which every breeder in the country ought to contribute , and be a member ; for through the co-operation of the . different interests , unified by the Congress , every breeder is sure to be benefitted by increased popularity of the breed . I am sure we are all willing to help , and desire to do so , when we are to be benefitted . If we are not , ...

One Animal and Three Hogs to an Acre THIS is a fair estimate of the average feeding ability of the soil . On a farm of 80 acres the highest limit of efficiency is 20-acre fields . Large fields diminish the earning power because two small fields alternated will furnish much more support for stock than the same average in one big field . The fence is the important factor ; and with the liberal use of gates , unlimited extension and alternation is simple . The steel in Ellwood fence is specially as to prevent sagging . Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man A . J . Lovejoy , Roscoe , 111 Regarding the Futurity Entries . I am pleased to see so many breeders making entries in this new department ; and I believe it will prove a good thing for the breeder , and also for the Berkshire breed in general ., In the first place , those who wish to make entries should be quite careful in selecting the animals which they intend to enter , for if all animals should be entered in this Futurity , there would be too many inferior ones that might be palmed offon this account . It should be the cause of a higher class of animals being selected , so that the standard of excellence of such animals as are shown in the future will be higher than at present . We shall make a few entries from Riverside Farm , but they will be limited to the very best ones we have . I hope to see this department become what the advanced registry is in dairy cattle—something above the average—and I urge every breeder to make at least one or more...

The great hog sale pulled off at Memphis , Tenn ., December 7 th , under the management of J . S . Henderson , Kenton , Tenn ., Secretary-Treasurer , Tri-State Swine Breeders Association , was a decided success from every point . The attendance was good and the interest was great , notwithstanding the great aviation meet that was on at the same time , also a real blizzard for two days before the sale . Many times during the sale the bird men were flying above the barn where the sale was being held , yet the interest was so great in the sale , that but little attention was given to the flying planes . In this sale 28 head of Berkshires , 28 head of Poland-Chinas and 1 Duroc-Jersey were s...

These farmers , their wives , sons ! and daughters attend the Farmers Institutes , which are held all over the United States , and are interested in more and better corn . Every now and then I receive an invitation to attend some of these institutes and give them my corn talk , — Perfect Kernels , and How to Grow Them . Therefore if you will give me a place in your valuable paper , I will tell your readers some of the things necessary to produce mora and better corn on every farm ...
OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN BERKSHIRE ASSOCIATION [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN BERKSHIRE ASSOCIATION GREETINGS FROM THE ASSOCIATION : THE BERKSHIRE WORLD AND CORN BELT STOCKMAN : Just a word of greeting to the many patrons of the American Berkshire Association who are readers , of your valuable paper . The last year has been the best in the history of the Association . In number of pedigrees recorded our business was nearly 50 per cent greater than the preceding year . It would surely seem that Berkshires are coming into their own . The demand for good Berkshires seems to be limited only by the supply . Berkshire breeders are fortunate in having a hog that will meet all the requirements of the breeder , the packer and the consumer . They are to be congratulated upon the fact that the personnel of the Berkshire breeders is of the highest order , and by their skill and ability the breed is constantly improving . They should be happy in the fact that in The Berkshire World they have the best breed organ published . The begin...
A PROFITABLE TYPE [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911
A PROFITABLE TYPE ; I have read with much Interest the ¦ ¦ articles under the above caption . This thing we are pleased to speak of as type has puzzled breeders for a long time . The writer is comparatively new in the Berkshire game , and I have been accustomed to hear of the Gentry type , the Lovejoy type , brood sow type , show type , etc . These confusing , and ofttimes conflicting , terms have led me to try to determine what type is the most profitable . With the man who feeds hogs for market , the one question is , How many pounds of pork can I produce from a bushel of corn ? With the breeder who raises hogs to sell for breeding , ue has other points . to consider than the mere making of weight . ¦ In the light of all that has been written during the past six months by our friends Spicer and Hibbard , and , as the result of more or less careful observation at the big shows during the past four years , I have concluded that I want to tie to a sort of middle 1 type , if there be ...
