MADAME JUSSERAND AMERICAN GIRL WHO MARRIED A FRENCHMAN*, NOW IN DIPLOMATIC SWIM. French Ambassador at Washington Given Position Largely on Account of Wife's Nativity— New Embassy Building Projected. How much a wife can do to help her husband in a public career is con vincingly proven by the married life of Madame Jusserand, the American wife of the French Ambassador at Washington. Indeed M. Jusserand was selected by the Government of France to act as the accredited agent of our sister republic at Uncle Sam's headquarters largely because of the fact that he had an American wife who it was believed juid be of great assistance to him in handling any negotiations which might have to be carried on between the two na tions. THE WHITE COMPANY CHAPTER XIII. The prince's reception-room waa fitted up with all the state and luxury which the fame and power of its owner de manded. A high dais at the further end was roofed in by a broad canopy of scar let velvet spangled with silver fleurs-de lis. In the center of the dais were two very high chairs. On that to the right sat a tall and well-formed man with red hair, a livid face, and a cold blue eye. He lounged back in a careless position, and yawned repeatedly. On the other throne there was perched bolt upright, a little round pippin-faced person, who smiled and bobbed to everyone whose eyes he chanced to meet. Be tween, and a little in front of them, on a humble charette or stool, sat a slim dark young man, whose quiet attire and modest manner would scarce proclaim him to be the most noted prince in Europe. He sat .will his hands clasped round his knee, his head slightly bent, and an expression of trouble upon his clear, well-chiselled features. Below on eith...

Xew Potash Discovery. )ne series of experiments have just ;n concluded by the Department of riculture that promise to be of lm nse value to the farmers of the intry in furnishing them with a sv supply of fertilizer at very much ;aper rates than has ever been pos le before,, and at the same time ancipating this country from Ger ny, which has heretofore furnished nost our entire supply of potash tilizer. It is a loug and quite an cresting story, and probably will an a great deal to agriculture in s country. The most remarkable •t of it is, too, that the idea origln d in the bureau of road*, which ninally has nothing to do with fer zers. ..ast summer when Dr. Cushman of roads office was working in the oratory with very finely powdered k, the idea struck him, as it has uck a good many other chemists, t it was a natural born shame it this country, with an unlimited iply of rock high in its percentage potash, should have to depend on er countries for its potash salts, for re has never bee...

There are thousands of Madame Emma Eames' admirers who, hearing her sing this season, will think they know her well. But this is not very profitable. The progressive farmer has found that it pays to give strict attention to the sorting and packing of his crop in or der that it may bring for him a much larger amount of money. Just when to pick is one of the se crets of the trade which all orchard ists do not appreciate. The time of picking red apples is commonly guaged by their color and that of yellow ap ples by the color of the seeds. The latter Is the only reliable test of ripe ness, for an apple picked just as the seeds have turned a light brown, and before they become dark around the edges, will be found to have not only full flavor, but the best keeping qual ity. But red apples are often left for some time after the seeds ...
