MEADE ' COUNTY NEWS John D. Wehrle, Pub. MEADE, . - KANSAS. i monument to Capt James Cook was recently unveiled in New Zev mnd. That coreless apple found in Maine may be taken as prophetic of the ap plelcss Eden of the future. The best way to prove that a work is not impossible is to set earnestly about its accomplishment Impudence and audacity will often accomplish more than modesty and wisdom, but their victories are short tired. A proposed law to send wife desert ers to the penitentiary for from two to five years might lessen tbo tend ency to make marriage a failure. "With all new diamonds will go a paste duplicate for ordinary wear," says a wholesale jeweler. That is all right. Many people have had their past ones ordered ahead. A Paris physician states that in so ciety one may easily recognize, by the superior quality of their hair, the girls whose parents have risen from poverty to wealth. As a rule, the children of the poorer classes have more luxuriant hair than the offsprin...

1 , WORKS IN THE GARDEN. Efghty-Seven Years Old, But Has a Sound Back. Robert Scollan, 87 years old, ot 55 Garden St., Seneca Falls, N. Y., a fine, sturdy old gentle man, who works in his own gar den, gives thanks to Doan's Kidney Pills for his sound hack and kidneys. Mrs. Goetchious, his daughter, says: "Father had a severe at tack ot kidney trouble and lumbago, which caused him much suffering. He began taking Doan's Kidney Pills and was soon cured. We always keep them on hand. My husband was cured of bad pains in the back by taking only part of a box." Sold by all dealers. 30 cents a box. Fcster-Milburn Co..' Buffalo, X. Y. Connecticut's Bad Record. Connecticut is usually regarded as a safe and pleasant place to live in, and yet it had 43 murders in 1906, where Maine had only two. To be sure, Connecticut has more people than Maine, but not so very many more; it has fewer than 1,000,000, while Maine has 725,000. It is fair to" state that it was an unusually bad year for the old Xut...

MEADE COUNTY NEWS John D. Wehrle, Pub. MEADE, KANSAS. The Superstition of Seamen. Seamen are superstitious, but their notion that certain vessels are unlucky seem often to be borne out by facts, says Leslie's Weekly. The steamer Saratoga, which wa3 sunk on the Hud son river several weeks ago by col lision with the Adirondack, had long been accounted unlucky by Hudson river captains. Her misfortunes be gan by her success In getting aground mysteriously and often when she was sew, though she had one of the most skillful and careful of commanders; and it was her way to get stuck in the mud for a good long stay. An unlucky ship which had a very eventful history was the Cromartyshire, which was re cently wrecked off the coast of Chile. She was built in Scotland in 1879, and her quarter century of life was full of jtragedy. On July 4, 1898, she sank the 'French liner La Bourgogne in a col lision, 662 lives being lost. A few years ago she caught fire, narrowly es caping total destruction, ...

PROVE EVERY CLAIM Dr. Williams' Pink Pills a Specific For Anaemia and a Safe Family Medicine. When the body becomes run down, either as a result of overwork, worry or a severe illness, an examination of the blood would show it to be weak and watery. This condition is called anaemic, which is the medical term for "bloodless." The common symp toms are paleness of the lips, gums and cheeks, shortness of breath and palpitation of the heart after the slightest exertion, dull eyes and los3 cf appetite. Mr. Louis L. Clark, a painter, of 19 Lincoln Place, Plainfield. N. J., says: "Last May I was obliged to undergo an operation for appeudxitis and while the operation in itself was suc cessful, I did not recover my strength and health. I was confined to my bed Tor over a month and was under the doctor's care. When I was able to Bet up my legs were so weak and un steady that I could only walk with a cane with difficulty. "I was getting no better and could not think of going back to work. I was...

MEADE COUNTY NEWS John D. Wehrle, Pub. MEADE, KANSAS. Impure Air. The Importance ol ventilation and of a constant supply of fresh air in living-rooms and wherever man abides, whether sleeping or waking, has often been mentioned in these columns. Without air life is impossible, and .un less that air be moderately pure, health cannot be maintained, although it is astonishing, and a proof of the wonderful adaptation of living beings to their environment, . to note how great an amount of impure air can . De endured with seeming impunity. There are two forms of impurity in the air gaseous and solid. The gases, those resulting from the exhalations from the lungs, and in city houses from the 'little, unnoticed leaks from the gas pipes and from defective plumbing, are the -most injurious. For the removal of these, says New York Weekly, free ventilation from opn wlnodws and open fireplaces is most efficacious, but It Is of little service In the removal of the other kind of impurity; that is ...

MEADE COUNTY NEWS 'John D. Wehrle, Pub. MEADE, . . . KAN3A8. TL Book of .lob ha been drama tized and is to be put on the stage. Cheer up. A Chicago poet hag written a eulogy on the bath, thus conveying the im pression that he has taken one. It i a surprise to the public that a man of August Belmont's financial itandiiig has not had appendicitis long go. It has been discovered that the Hai tians are fond of babies; in fact, con sider them delicious ' when properly c.ioked. Newport society belles went to a dance dressed as farmers' daughters. They must have suffered terribly from iho heat. While the British Hon and the Rus sian bear may lie down together, it is a safe guess that each will keep one eye open. Thicker come the throbs as Art gets under way for its brief, hectic, steam heated season. Let us warm our hands at Art. Bishop Huntington says he never saw an angel with whiskers. Coney - Island is unique in many respects, but it was the firs' place in the world where first class at tractions were ever opened to the pub lic for an admission price of lev cents. The attractions have steadily jproved in quality at Coney, but tK. price re mains the same.
