Akizona Sentinel, SATURDAY, - - AUGUST 10, 1878 This Yuma and Fort Worth mail-route causes a good deal of grumbling. The contract was taken by J. D. Chidester at lower price than it can be carried for. The Postmaster General told him so, and offered to let him off, but he was elated at having a big contract, and would not then withdraw. A week afterward he Was better posted and asked to be let off, but then the Postmaster General said "No, sir." The ways of mail contractors are past finding out. This contract was let on a schedule time much longer than has been given for carrying the same mails for the past three and a half years. The programme is evidently to secure a shortening of schedule time and to thereon base good claim for increased compensation. To carry out the first part of that pro gramme there is no trouble in securing the cooperation of the people. Everybody ia willing to sign petitions or write letters for that purpose, no matter how hot they may be against the contra...

Akizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, - - AUGUST 17, 1S78 The Yuma Indian Scare. Exchanges Please Notice. The damage done to Yuma, and to Arizona, by the late " Indian Scare" here, can hardly be esti mated. A few choice spirits have chuckled over their drinks, and have had a chance to say " Aint we raised hell?" as newspapers come in from all parts of the United States, reproducing the "Murderous plot to massacre the whites at Yuma," that was fabri cated for sensational purposes by those reckless men. While hard working1 men are making every effort to induce capital to invest in our mines and to invite settlers to occupy our lands, a few foot loose fellows have raised the very hue-and-cry that, of all others, is best calculated to defeat those ends. The scare has served its political purpose, and is enjoyed by its originators as a good joke. For them it is now all over; but Yuma County and Arizona will feel its bad effects ior along time to come. It is easier to tear down thaai it is to build...

Arizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, AUGUST 24, 1S78 From parlies lately returned from the Santa Kita Mountains we get glowing accounts of the Bushell and Saint Louis mines, on which the first two companies in the Toltec Syndicate were or ganized and incorporated by Col. J. D. Graham, its Managing Di rector This gentleman left here last Wednesday, in company with Gov. Salibrd, bound to the mines in Aztec and Tyndall Districts. 3T. S. Osborn, Esq., a prominent lawyer of Chicago, who has betu in that section examining titles of mines, etc., spoke very highly of the two above named. J. C. Waterman, Esq., of St. Joseph, Mo., who has been for the past three months, in and about these mines, declares them to be far in advance of what has been said of them, both as to richness of their ore and its quantity. Dr. J. II. McKee, of Los Angeles, has been out there about a month, and con firms all that has been said by others. It is now some eighteen months since Col. Graham organ ized the Aztec Syndicat...

tgnnnOTiwonrr; Arizona Sentinel. SATURDAY, - - AUGUST 81, 1S78 A numbeu of causes, entirely beyond control, have made it im possible for us to get out a full paper this week. This has hap pened but once before during the seven and a half years that The Sentinel lias been in existence. It's queer that Tjie Sentinel can not mention any kind of a disreputable matter without hav ing two or three Democratic edi tors jump up, each declaring that he never did it, and thatanyman that says ho did is a liar and be longs to a ring. A prominent worker for Campbell wrote us, etc. If wo had said, "a gehtloman of Prcscott wrote us," nobody would have known whom wo meant. If wo had put it, " the most faithless scamp in Prcscott," then everybody could have iden tified the man. Therefore wo merely said "a prominent worker for Campbell " wrote us that we could make some money by work ing for his patron. We d eel i n cd , ad m i t ti n g h is pro position that " it's tiresome work scribbling political ...

UJLU1LU IIIIIIH Qi?-vrriA-nsTT?T - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER T, 1S78 No Water Spouts. Every time that it rains on the California Desert breaks occur in the railroad track, and just as regularly do the California pa - papers prattle about damage done by the water-spout, or "cloud burst." The latter term inex actly, though prraphically, de scribes a phenomenon which rarely has occurred on the great desert, but never since the rail road v:w built. The fact is that the road-bed is, for miles, thrown up of the loose, ashy material covering parts of the desert. This material does not readily absorb moisture, yet it offers no resistance to currents of water. Kains' fall upon it without soak ing into the ground, every in equality of surface becomes a rivulet, and every depression a pond. Wherever the road-bed obstructs free liow of this water it accumulates in quantity greater than can at once be drawn off by existing culverts, until it gets to overflowing across the track; then it quickly cuts d...
