SCIENTIFIC MISCELLANY. -A great telescope lens, nearly 29 Inches in diameter, is being finished for the Paris Observatory. -Dr. Muller, of Geneva, has made a calculation in which he estimates the number of plant species existing on the globe to reach a minimum total of 250. 000. -Herr J5ergell, of Berlin has brought out a curious device by means of which pictures of varioes kils are burnt out on a piece of ordinary-looking rose colored paper. A glowing match is ap plied at two finely-perforated points, and the sparks communicated then begin gradually to move over the paper, tracing cst the picture. Neither leaves its prop er path or injures the papcer lwyond, and when the end of the path is reachedl, t: e spark goes out. -Not the least promi.singgapplication of the new luminous paint is found in the production of a safety lamp for coal miners.
