The consumption of horse and donkey flesh as human food appears to be on the increase in Paris. Last year 30,000 horses alone were thus disposed of in the French capital. Is the dead letter -office at Washing ton 6,253,368 pieces of mail matter were received during the past year, having. about $33,860 enclosed, and 8? per cent, of the money was restored. Emigbation to America has created such a scarcity of farm hands in Ger many that land owners are importing Chinese coolies in hordes for field work in various sections of that country. The president of the Indiana state normal school savs in his annual re port to the governor that the state is Buffering' from a "surplus of teachers. Upward of Sl90.000.000, it is esti mated, is spent annually on sport in Great Britain. The turf is, of course, the most expensive sport and accounts for nearly S55,000,000. A former lord justice of the court of appeals of England stated recently that "some English doctors are in the habit of receiving commissions from undertakers on funerals procured through their efforts."
