His home had been, from his earliest reinembranco, upon a stony, worn-out farm uf fifty acres, situated upon the Seneca Lake, in Western New York. His father had become so heavily involved in debt, that two weeks beforo his death the farm had been sold by foreclosure of mortgage. And now what was Mark to do? lie was a lad of nineteen, slight and boyish in frame, but with tho strength of a man in his sinewy arms. He had tho usual advantages of education afforded to farmers' sons. He returned home from his father's grave to the small, unpainted story and a half house, and after him came his father's only brother, a well-to-do farmer, who resided in the neighborhood. Much of its time was occupied iv examining the security offered by Mr. Hector Davis, the treasurer, who, by on order made at the previous court, was required to give a new bond as treasurer. We were sorry to see the undisguised manifestation of feeling by some parties, who don't believe anything good can come out of Nazareth, against that gentleman, who is admitted on all sides to have made an efficient officer; and we thought tlio court, itself not entirely free from its participation. Mr. Davis is a Virginian, and the county chajnnari of the Republican committee of this county ; the latter fact, perhaps, created the difficulty. (Evening State gutttnal THURSDAY EVE'G, MAIL 21, 1872. in km 'un lio n;i I Copyright. attention, was vciy ably discussed some time since in a scries of letters by Henry C Carey, t,hc well-known writer on political economy. Mr. Carey's remarks, in the outset, that the question of an international copyright is not generally approached from the true point of view. Formerly, an international copyright was advocated in the interests of authors. It is now urged in the interests of ft few New York publishers, or, perhaps, to speak more correctly, in the iu«ests of them and some English authors übined. Mr. Carey contends that an jrnational copyright should be adopted, rejected, as the interests ofthe people at ge may determine. In all countries, he reminds the reader copyright is the creature of statute law. No nation has ever admitted the claim, lately set up by a few literary men and their booksellers, that an author has a right to levy a tax on the community, at his own option, for the p...
