A DoAt'a Crew netcned At •*•• [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 14 March 1850

A DoAt'a Crew netcned At •*•• The schr. Jacob H. Rycrson, Capt. Dennison, fn.»i down the coast, arrived last evening. She reports that in Latitude 24 3 N, Long. 112 3 W. •he fell in with a boat containing mx men in a stato of starvation and greatly emaciated. She picked them up, and every aid in the power of (apt Dcnnison and his officers and crow was extended to them It appeared that the boat belonged to the French whaler General Tent*. and that thirty five days previous, whon after a whale a sudden gale of wind sprang up nnd they were unable to regain their ship. During that time they had been drifting about in the open boat, suffering the most horrible torture from hunger and thirst. They had succeeded in capturing some turtle and seals, which they devoured raw in order to nppcaso their hunger, drinking the blood in lieu of water. The boat's crow consisted of the mate of the Tcstc and six seamen. It is the opinion of the mate that the other boats' crews must have been lost in the...

«.<»lil in ni' lAM ii«< I. «. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 14 March 1850

«.<»lil in ni' lAM \ii«< I. «. Wo learn from a letter received from a friend in this city that gold has been discovered near Los Angeles, the most beautiful and populous of the old California cities upon the coast. Since the discovery of the gold mines that city has been materially depressed until quite recently, when several good ventures in the way of merchandize have been disposed of to good advantage. We are a little dubious about these new discoveries, but sincerely hope that the anticipations excited by the preesent discovery will bo fully realized. The anticipated existence of bituminous coal in the region of the same place has already turned attention to that quarter, and ere long, should the present hopes be realized, we may very reasonably expect the city of the Angels to become a flourishing and important one. Wo subjoin an extract from the letter alluded to : Los Angeles, March 1, 1850. There is every prospoctof gold in the greatest abundance in the...

Affairs In Stockton. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 14 March 1850

Affairs In Stockton. We have received the following communication from a resident of Stockton at present temporarily sojourning in our city, relative to a letter signed " Truth Teller," which appeared in our columns a few days since As we are liound to give both sides of the question a showing, we insert the communication of "Truth Told." San Fkav<is<o, March 12, 1850. Mtiwrs. Editors — An occasional correspondent from Stockton over the signature of " Truth Teller" merits some notice at least lor the boldness of his statements. Mm to be respectful towards Mr. Truth Teller, 1 have no hesitation in saying that his communication in your paper of the 1 1th instant contains at least as many incorrect averments as it docs lines. Tpon one or two special points 1 only have to do with him. His ready sympathy in the suspension of the late Judge of First Instance bitnivs the complexion of hi.s opinions to the community of Stockton, and should he show himself to the lit:li...

Stockton can well afford to extend a liberal support to a press; and in fact the interests of the town imperatively demand it We wish our new contemporaries overy possible success and ahull hull their first appearance pith pleasure,
