TVS CALDWELL NSW8 FBtDAT, AUGUST IS* 1M1 • e ENGINES A young man named Cramer aston- ished the world the other day by fly- ing from Detroit to Greenland with- out telling anybody that he waB going. The important thing about that flight íb that he didn't use any gasoline. His engine is o| the Diesel type, which uses anything in the form of oil for fuel. As he put it, he could fly it on butter or whaleoil if neces- sary. The best gasoline engines today are only K per cent effic ient—that is, they utilize only 8 per cent of the power in the fuel. Crude oil engines of the Diesel type are more efficient than that but still far from perfect. The next thing in engines will be one in which the «vaste of energy necessary to convert reciprocal motion, into pro- tary motion will Ik- done away with. It is generally realised that Mr. Hoover, in talking the step, has re- turned to a field in which he is con- ceded by everybody to be supreme— that of relieving distress. Gifford is the commander of five billions of capital and the employer of hundreds of thousands of work- ers, as head of the American Tele- ¥hone and Telegraph Company. he mere sise of any problem menas nothing to hhn, a valuable asset to man faced with the pros- pect of caring for an unemployed army of between five and seven millions of people out of work. His main task, however, will not be to deal out direct aid, or to draw upon the Federal Treasury for money to alleviate the sufferings of citizens, but to coordinate relief plans now being made by the multitude of cities and states.
