April 25 1996 The Brand Page 7 Game of golf is almost a love-hate relationship Imagine with me if you will. It is a perfect day in West Texas the kind that only roll around about four times a year. The sun is shining. The birds are singing and the butter- flies are floating effortlessly through the air. The wind blows only an occa- sional cool breeze to break the still- ness (we are still imagining). Suddenly and without warning there is a booming "Whack!"a sound of breaking wood a large splashing noise and a rash of non-sequential yet dearly audible expletives that break the calm and cause heads to turn. It is an event that happens every Saturday morning and its cause is unmistakable. The pine grove just to the left of No. 13 fairway has claimed yet anoth- er Titlest and another chunk of golf- ing pride. Going into Saturday's match both teams were undefeated in conference at 5-0 because the match between the two schools was cancelled due to snow. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Cowboy nctlcrs have ad- vanced to the NAIA national tennis tour- nament. The Cowgirls were not as lucky. The HSU women who played as the confer- ence underdogs throughout the tourna- ment fell to the Howard Payne women 5- 4 in the conference finals. The Cowgirls will miss the NAIA national tournament for the first time in eight years. The No. 1-seeded Cowboys pounded the University of Dallas to meet up with Howard Payne in the finals. The rest of the day on the half hour students staff and faculty of Hardin-Simmons University stopped what they were doing sleeping studying eating or working and knelt in the Logsdon Chapel to intercede in prayer for HSU Abilene Texas and the United States. At 9:30 a.m. the intercessors were joined by many of the HSU family in the chapel to gather for a special National Day of Prayer Observance. Page 2 The Brand May 3 19 Have you ever been somewhere and a person waited up to you and started talking to you like they knew you? Then come to find out they had actually met you several years ago but you forgot This has happened to me numerous times. My first response is always one of wanting to ask them who they are but I do not want to seem rude or ignorant' so I will wait and hopefully through some divine revelation remember them. The temporary brain freeze that we experience dur- ing these moments happens to everyone. I have not met anyone who can remember all the people they have met k a lifetime. Of course there is that chance that I have net ibis person but forgotten who there were. But I seri- ously doubt it. I have always pondered usually in the middle of these situations how does this person remember me? Did I do something so utterly stupid that they could not forget? Is my presence so tremendous that people are in awe of me? Yeah right Somehow I doubt that k would be th...

I May 3 1996 The Brand Page 3 Rock climbing is great way to utilize national state parks By Evan Prathir special writer There are certain natural areas that the U.S. Government deems so valuable that they arc set apart from the rest of society for the purpose of recreation by the soci- ety. These are commonly known as state and national parks or recreation areas and cannot be bought or sold. They belong to the citizens of the United States they belong to us. In the U.S. forest areas are set aside under federal authority for several purpos- es: conserving water timber wildlife and for providing recreational areas for the public. These areas are strictly supervised so that their beauty and resources can be enjoyed for many generations. Most of these areas have a built-in paradox: they often depend on tourism financially which is generated by public interest in nature the preservation of their wildlife depends on its not being violated. This is usually resolved by allowing limited acce...

Page 6 The Brand May 3 19 A philosophical By Kris Robison guest columnist Last Friday Trcntcn Hilburn the edi- tor or the illustrious Brand asked mc to write an article concerning my experience at Hardin-Simmons because I am graduat- ing in May. After much pensive reflection I fell that any personal anecdote I could give might seem somewhat trite and mast like- ly overextended. Thus I reasoned that with limited space I could present a gen- eral (and somewhat discursive) survey on some of the lessons I have learned in the post four years. I make no apologies that what I say seems as iT I preach; nonetheless I hope that some small glimmer of philosophical wisdom I have gained will elucidate another mind. For the brevity of discus- sion I have limited myself to three areas of my life in which I have gained insight while attending HSU. The most obvious place to begin is in the area of friendships. Friendships. No genuine college sur- vivor could leave the hallowed doors of the Universit...

Page 10 The Brand May 3 1996 Taking one last look from the Press Box Funny thing this life that we live. I like to compare it to a game that I really enjoy playing golf. In life as in golf a participant can really experience a wide range of emotions. For example the excite- ment that an eagle or a birdie can bring could be paralleled with acing a tough test. Making a par is like every day goings on; nothing spec- ' tacular but nothing just rotten cither. When you get into the bogey and double bogey range though WATCH OUT because times are get- ting tough. I can compare the anguish of making bogey after miss- ing a four-foot putt to flunking a test or running out of money both of which I admit to. I think that the trick to mastering life just like mastering golf is to stay around par most of the time. That way the eagles and birdies don't go to our heads and the bogeys don't weigh us down quite so much. Even so that is much easi- er said than done. Over the past three years at grand ...

May 3 1996 The Brand Page 11 HSU wraps up another year of athletic excellence BY TRENTEN HlLBURN and Josh Bowerman 2nd Annual Brand Athletic Awards U It is time once again to name the University's top student-athletes. Hardin-Simrnons University students and fans wit- nessed a variety of emotions this season as the men's soccer team broke a 16-game losing streak the Cowboy basketball team broke the 20-win plateau once again; the football team made its fourth consecutive playoff appear- ance; and the list goes on. The Brand Athletic Awards were established by the student newspaper to recognize excellence on the play- ing field. This year's Branding Iron Award has been expanded to included 28 student athletes that showed true heart and exhibited themselves as team players. Let's get started. Todd Baumam stepped into the shoes of Kevin Beam and led the team to its third consecutive TIAA championship. Baumann was also named first-team TIAA at QB and he also garnered NAIA Player of the W...

Page 2 The Brand August 19 1996 Reflections of a fifth-year senior As I reflect back upon four of the most wonderful years of my life here at Hardin-Simmons University I think to myself "How did they pass so quickly?" It seems like I was sitting in front of a camera in HSU's print shop only yesterday wearing my silly look- ing Michigan cap and waiting for the lady to snap my first college I.D. photo. And the cap wasn't worn just any old way. Some of you guys remember the old wavey-bangs-coming-out-from-under-your-bill routine (and some of you guys might shamefully still do that!). Anyway the memory still lies fresh on my mind but I really don't know why. Probably because I realized at that moment that I was finally through with a miserable high school career through with the pressures of putting on the front that was so highly demanded of me; through with putting up a physod just to keep friends that really weren't the friends I thought they'd be; and most of all through with trying...

August 19 1996 The Brand Page 3 Heritage plays major part in Orientation 96 By Chris Hatcher Editor in Chief Another year of academics is upon us with hundreds of beanies on the hori- zon and the smell of fresh fish in the air. Hardin-Simmons University's 1996 New Student Orientation week begins today as hundreds of incoming freshman and transfer students prepare to make a new home on the campus of HSU. This year's program entitled "Make Your Mark" is designed by Linda Carlclon dean of students and the HSU Steering Committee to equip and encour- age new students to make an impact while at Hardin-Simmons. Activities during the week including an all-campus "tag" and the ever-infamous beanie capping ceremony allow new students the opportunity to socialize with their fellow classmen. But through tradition assemblies a sense of pride is also created in every newcomer toward the University's rich heritage. Here are some of the historical "icons" that will be focused on this week. honor of...

Greer an HSU sophomore at the time of her death was hon- ored through an endowed scholarship created by her par- ents Mr. and Mrs. Andy Greer of Kilcen. The scholarship will be awarded by the Board of Young Associates to students who "demonstrate a strong academic record leadership in campus life and activities and personal commitment to HSU's goals and ideals" according to Charles Richardson of media relations. During her two years at HSU Erin was involved in Baptist Student Ministries and the Sigma Alpha social club. She participated in Student Congress and was a member of HSU's Student Foundation. August 19 1996 The Brand Page 5 Department of Theatre sets stage for new year By Chris Hatcher Editor in Chief The most difficult question for the Hardin-Simmons University Department of Theatre to answer this year may be how to top last year's excellent consistency? Last season produced many high- lights including the ever-passionate "JB" the musical pizazz of "Guys and Dolls" and the utterly hysterical play "The Odd Couple" -- performances that will be hard to surpass. But a betting man would give HSU's acting elite the benefit of the doubt and say we're in for another great year of the- atrical excellence. According to department head Dr. James Ivey Hardin-Simmons will present four major stage productions during its 1996-97 theater season. The first of these "Blithe Spirit" by Noel Coward will run Oct. 3-5 and 10- 12 in Van Ellis Theatre. Sherry Fcblcs will direct this comedy about a woman's spirit who won't leave her living remar- ried husband alone. Dr. Ivcy's own "A Scottish P...

Page 6 The Brand August 19 1996 NOISE OF SUMMER Money mayhem and an Oscar or two highlight summer films of v96 By Chris Hatcher Editor in Chief We've been twisted caught in a chain reaction and attacked by deadly aliens over the past several months. Tom Jim and Arnold reared their million dollar heads as we were faced with an impossible mission introduced to an annoying cable guy and erased by everyone's favorite Terminator. Explosions rocked us elephantine Eddie drove us nutty and an Oscar-worthy dose of phenomenal courage touched us all. For those who've been hibernating since May this is all part of your ever-typical tour through summertime movie madness a time where big action and big bud- gets come together to produce one big entertainment headache. The summer of '96 was of course no exception to the rule. In fact this year's summer films exploded loud- er than ever leaving a pile of wreckage and wealth unmatched by any previous Hollywood efforts. The first signs of mayhem came...
