As auction items are initially presented, buyers have the option of either keeping the animal or item or donating it to a charity or individual. Attendees also may choose at any time to "add-on" to a student's total with a flat donation. While total first-time buys for the auction were $52,450.45, down from last year's record of $71,096.25, students gained much more this year with add-ons - to the tune of S9.446.50. The total amount paid directly to students was $61,896.95. It's the inviting mantra of long- time Wylie residents who ooze hos- pitality and exemplify "front porch" social graces. They know their neighbors — since generations back in some cases — and could tell you about the con- struction of Lake Lavon, the town's extinct artesian-well-fed pool or the legend of Goat Man Road. These folks, with roots that bur- row deeply into Wylie's black clay earth, are the storytellers and tradi- tion-teachers of the town. But Wylie, growing by thousands of new residents each year, is also a bedroom community, filled with busy commuters who transplant here to raise their young families. For old and new blood alike, Wylie has a vibrant history with tra- ditions that continue to thrive along- side the changes the city has experi- enced with continued population growth. Two Wylie groups have coordi- nat...

I escape into the pages of novels the way many escape into the TV set, but 1 am excused from commercials. I I've been aggravated lately, how- ever, by books which feature female main characters. They're kicking me in the self-esteem. These powerhouse gals are foren- sic pathologists, FBI agents, news anchor women and detectives. Not a comedienne/writer/band mom in the bunch. They either have fabulous blonde hair which requires the occasional touch-up but drives men wild, or they have cascades of shoulder- length (at least) chestnut curls.
