THE VAGARIES OF SHIRE COUNCILS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 25 January 1901

THE VAGARIES OF SHIRE COUNCILS. TO THE EDITOR OF THIE GUARDIAN. SIR, - From the tone adopted by your contributor " Hawk-Eye," and your correspondent "Ratepayer," in the last issue of your very readable paper, when dealing with council topics, it strikes me very forcibly that neither of them have had much experience of the doings of municipal bodies in this colony. From my knowledge of how some councils carry on their work, I can safely say that our local represen tatives compare very favorably with many similar bodies in this country. I will just mention one instance of how in one district I lived in a worse system of topsy-turveyism existed than could possibly exist here; in fact, where a woman had the entire guidance of the municipal policy. The lady I refer to had a very near relative in the council, who, by various means, had obtained a following which included almost the whole of the council. So firm indeed could he reign that he was credited with being able to put in or out an...

No Title [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 25 January 1901

[Our correspondent takes up a very gloomy view, and one not to be coin mended, of things in general-although it cannot be denied that Healesville is behind the times. " Actions speak louder than words," and in the face of the "scarcity of funds " existing in our council at the present time to carry out many much-needed improvements, if he were to come out with a dona tion to help put the recreation reserve in something like order-if it was only the erection of the urinals referred to -he would be doing something in the right direction, and no doubt others would follow suit, and before the big picnic comes off the " rec." could Ie made presentable to the most exacting. ED. G.]

The Best Remedy for Stomach and Bowel Troubles. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 25 January 1901

The Best Remedy for Stomach and Bowel Troubles. " I have leen in the drug business for twenty years and h]ave sold most all of the proprietary medicines of any note. Among the entire list I have never found anything to equal Chanm berlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy for all stomach and bowel troubles," says 0. W. Wakefield, of Columbus, Ga. " This remedy cured two severecases of cholera morbus in my family and I have recommended and sold hundreds of bottles of it to my customers to their entire satisfaction. It affords a quick and sure cure in a pleasant form. No family should be without it. I keep it in my house at all times." For sale by Mrs. Munro, agent, Healeaville; W. J. Dawborn, agent, Yarra Glen. A TRIP THROUGH THE SHIRE. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 25 January 1901

A TRIP THROUGH THE SHIRE. At the invitation of President Sloss, a representative of this journal accom panied the councillors on their annual inspection of the roads of the shire. The councillors undertaking the trip were the President (Cr. Sloss), and Ors. Sheehan, M'Gretton, Boone, Furnmston, Keppel, and Nichols, acccompanied by their engineer and secretary (Mr. J. G. Farquhar). A start was made from Healesville by six of the party in a trap drawn by a pair of horses, under the control of the president, at about 10 o'clock on Friday morning last, Or. Sheehan following on horseback. The drive to Marysville was a very plea sant one, the scenery to be viewed on the drive up, especially that on the Blacks Spur, was much admired by those who had not previously been along the road, and the opinion was expressed that it would be hard to get more picturesque spots in any other part of the colony. Cr. Nichols met the party at Narbethong, and pointed out several requirements wanted in that ...
