How Clegg Might Have Been Saved. [Newspaper Article] — Bowral and Robertson Free Press — 7 August 1901

How Clegg Might Have Seen Saved. (By in tlio Wurriwa Times.) ' : The astounding rovelatiou of.the inability of the Sydney Fire Brigade to cope with the; fire at Anthony Hordern'a on tha lOtli nit.," seems to liuve been met by local critics with a good deal of composure, as if uo one was surprised by it. Naturally enough, Clegg's tragio death attracted more notice than any thing else connected with the event; but all the criticism on it seems to have turned on. Constable Conroy's action in preventing the use of a tarpaulin. The comments of the Sydney press amount to little more than saying that the brigade, although highly efficient, was not qnite equal to this partic ular emergency, and that, after all, the melanoholy result must bo accepted as una voidable. At the same time we are told that if a fire should bredlc out in any other buildings of the game kind, their utter des truction may be looked upon as certain; This lackadaisical style of criticism pre sents itself in other quart...

Obituary. [Newspaper Article] — Bowral and Robertson Free Press — 7 August 1901

Obituary. IT is our painful duty to record the death of Master Fred Asher, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Asher, of " Hopewood," Bowral, whose death took place on Fri- day evening, 2nd inst., from influenza and pneumonia, at the age of 6½ years. The   little fellow, who was a great favourite with all those who knew him, first be- came ill on the 25th of last month, and despite the undoubted skill of Dr. Vallack, the careful nursing of a loving father and mother and the kindness shown by Mrs. B. M. Osborne, the Misses Osborne, and other kind friends, he passed away peace- fully as stated above. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Asher, who are both much respected throughout the district. The funeral took place on Monday, and was largely attended. The Rev. E. S. Wilkinson officiated at the grave. The bereaved parents received a number of beautiful wreaths, letters and cards of sympathy. Amongst those present at the funeral we noticed Mr. and Mrs. Asher (deceased's pa...

Bowral & Robertson Free Press. Football. [Newspaper Article] — Bowral and Robertson Free Press — 7 August 1901

Bowral & Robertson Free Press. Wednesday, August 7f 1901. Football* The match in connection with the Berrima-Camden Upion between the Bowral and Myra Vale clubs was played on Saturday last at Wildes Meadow, and resulted in a win for the former by six points to nil. The game was very rough from start to finish, and in the first stage of the game the home team seemed to have it all their own way, but gradually the visiting team worked up and play be came more even. After some scrummag ing for some time, Bowral obtained and forced on with a strong dribbling rush, a result of which Huggett rushed over, but owing to the referee's dissatisfaction Ss to the fairness of the try, a scrum was slot ted. The ball again in play, it was kick ed out of danger. Shortly before half time, a kick by Rutherford was mulled by Wheller, and Riley rushed forward' and planted the oval over the line. Rutherford took the kick but failed. Shortly   after, the half-time whistle sounded, the...
