CHELTENHAM v ELSTERNWICK. [Newspaper Article] — Moorabbin News — 20 June 1914

CHELTENHAM v ELSTERNWICK. These Junior teams met on the Cheltenham ground last Saturday, and an interesting game followed, the final scores indicating exactly the strenuousness of the contest, namely, Cheltenham 5-t; to Etstern wick 5 5. The game was as usual very late in starting, owing to the late arrival of the Elsternwiek team. On many occasions this season the late arrival of the various teams has caused considerable dissatisfaction, but last Saturday was really one of the worst, as the last quarter was piactically played in the dark. It would be well for the Association to take decisive notion to see that the games are started more promptly. The presentposition appears to be that teams are allowed to please themselves, and they do. Both prli s had a fairly strong team on t eo field, and it would be almost imn? possibe to pick out the best players on either side, The whole of the players combinied in one to secure a viciory for their si,!e The game was c'ean, and the kicking in...

Take the knife and send it home to my heart, Never to see you--how can I bear it Life, what is it but a span a tale half told, a dieam at the bestP What are worlaiy glories, even fame, compared to love? Sorrow and sick ness may ovortake you, and in sorrow has taitllaulunes no part? Are sweet mineiories of duvotion and self-doeual worth nothing on a siok-bed . THE DANGERS OF FOREIGN IMMIGRATION. [Newspaper Article] — Moorabbin News — 20 June 1914

THE DANGERS OF FOREIGN IMMIGRATION. --+- The Premier of Victoria, Mr. Watt, whie npeaking in London on imnl ,ration said that "Australiana d, sired to keep the country white, and to keep it British." Only those who have followed the immigration listory of the various dominions, can place a proper value on these prog iant words. The conditions of Southern Europe iave made it iecessary for the in 3abitants to leave their: native lanis, and seek a living in newer and freer :ountries, The burden of taxation, the military systems which threaten to be still more arduous and binding in the future than -they have been In the past, the increased price of fool, and, in some countries, the increased birth-rate, all add fuel to the fire of discontent which is spreading through Routhorn Russia, Poland, Htingnrv. Austria, Italy, and in a lesser de reeo, Germany. For the past twenty years Norti America has been a veritable haven for these wanderers, and it is' estl mated. that during that time the...

POULTRY NOTES.. . (By LEGI ORN) BURNI4EY EGG-.,AYING 1 COMPET'ITION The following are extracts from ' the report on the above, by A. Burt chief poultry expert: In submitting my report of the recent Egg-laying competition at Burnley there are many interesting, and also instructive, features in c.n nection with the tests which have from year to year been conducted. By a comparison of the !e,ulis in the various competitions in the Commonwealth and -New Zealand, much iuformation may be derived. These tests were firnt ins ituted., in New Sourh Wales in 1002. and in Victoria iu 1904. They .were, however, conducted iuA rmerica s , far back as 1897, wher( 234 p,»a of sight birds each were entered-for a laying competition, conducted by an American journal entitled the National Stockman and Farmer.
