ROAD MAKING. DR. JOHNSON declared that "the stand " a'rd of a people's civilisation is their ability ;for road, making," .and;^ad mitting the axiom to have any truth in it, we arc sadly behind in civilisation, according to the means we adopt for the. above purpose. If we metal a road .-a pretty constant operation, by-the bye-we JJstrew on the broken metal, and leave it to be cut into its bed by the narrow-wheeled vehicles that use the road-this is a tedious and very unsatisfactory operation, and acts most prejudicially to the other part of the road, as the traffic is most religiously diverted to the portion, however small, which has not been newly coated with metal, and hence this becomes " cut " up "-and by the time the one side has been worked down the other is ready for repair, besides the increased liability of accident in the. crossing and re-crossing the road to avoid the " rough places."
