Hints on Buying Cows. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 19 February 1904

Hints on Baying Cows, A well-to-do; farmer gave the ' Rural New Yorker' a little homily on bu3'ing coavs : — ' When you go into a barn to see a cow with a view to buy ing, and the cow does not please you thoroughly at the ' first look, you get out of the barn and go home.j If you stay around and try to have the cow suit you, w to find the good points on her that are not there, 3'oti Avill be apt to buy her, and nine chances in ten you will find she is not what you want at all, and you are stuck. How can you defraud a man more than to get him to buy a cow that is continually asking for more than she re turns ? It is also a good plan to have in mind that under ordinary circumstances the average dairyman is not going ! to sell yon his best cows, and there is generally some reason given besides the true one why he wants to get rid of that par ticular cow. . Why not quit buying and raise your own cows ? That may be something of a lottery, but not anywhere near like the one of tr\dng to p...

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 19 February 1904

To thk Editor. Sir, — Might I ask space to make a few remarks re the way my letter was received at the last Maroochy Shire Council meet ing. I thank Councillor Kelly for having niy letter read, but regret very much that he and the other councillors were evident ly misled by Mr. Bury. Now, sir, in fancy I see the great ' oiie rise and in a low tone and with a gentle sweep of the hand put the matter very nicely, but in his speech, composed of very little but personalties, I cannot find one straight fact to combat mine. If I am wrong let the council produce their proof and I Mill say : ' Thy will be done,' but when no attempt ! is made to answer my argument, I fail to i see why the letter should be shelved. 'I told Mr. M'Nab that he was liable, and Mr. Hall told me that Mr. M'Nab was liable,' simply amounts to nothing. Let the council produce their proofs, or back down fair and honest. Mr. Bury's assertion that I refused him my receipts, and also that...
