Sending Money Out of The Country. [Newspaper Article] — Camden News — 7 May 1896

. Sending Money Out .of The Country. (By John Haynesj M.P.) There, is still a lingering idea in some 'quarters -that Freetrade sends the ; money out of the country. Some -people (who, . Others,' half educated, believe it .?absolutely, and they parade their ignorance ✓ in letters to the press, and in speeches on iplatform. Others, again, state the thing -?ae a fact, while knowing better, but these '-?are the knaves who want to humbug the jpeople into : going Tfo,r P.y otection, so as to 'beat down direct taxation, that is a land ^tax. I give, here a statement of facts from the two Government returns — the Victorian 'Year «?Book ana . the New South Wales ^'Statistical Register. What isshow'^ is: this, 'that it is, the Protectionist Colony of Tictoria which sends out the money. Hn 1893, New South Wales sent out gold ?coin to the extent of \ £...

Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Camden News — 7 May 1896

Notes. Although we much regret to note the ab-: sence of Mr. J. D. Rankin from the position! of Alderman and Mayor of our municipal ; ?ceiitre, yet on' the~other hand we unhesitat ingly express the opinion that, the choice of 'our future Mayor has fallen into good hands; Alderman 'VV. C. Furner, J.P., was unani baously elected the/Mayor for . the remaining '? term -of '1896-7 at the election held; on Mon day last. Mr. J. D. Rankin, as a citizen i and as an alderman-, showed a keen perception of public matters, andj has been prominent in all matters relating to the well being and prosperity of the district, and for which his name -will 'ever be kindly .re membered and appreciated ; whether it is ? the intention of Mr. Rankin to again come . forward as a servant ;of the public is very doubtful, we think not-, but the ratepayers have to thank- him. for .'past services : ' as a ' working alderman he had but few equals. As before stated, the choice. has fallen on Alder , 'man W. 0.. Furn...
