LOCAL AND - DOMESTIC. Breaches of tor Masters' and Servants' Act. —-At j.bc Police Office, on Thursday, a youth named 'Giles Jtnndle, who had been hired by Itr. Murphy at the Immigration Depot for Messrs. Beck and Brown, of tlie Upper 'Moonfe River, was brought before the Bench charged with absenting himself since the 24th of March last. Mr. Murphy stated that lie believed the hoy had been induced by his father to break his agreement, and as heira* disinclined to have the boy dealt with by the magistrates further than by a reprimand, he having consou ted to proceed on to the station, perhaps the Bench would allow him to with draw the charge. The Police Magistrate then admonished the defendant, who stated his willingness to fulfil his agreement, andlio was theii permitted to depart, 'rejoicing at his narrow escape from being sent to prison.— Charles Scully wiu then called upon to- answer an information which had been filed ugainst him by Mr. John Moran, of the Jockey Club Inn, Uipge'...

OUR ABORIGINES. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 12 May 1857

OUR ABORIGINES. Sin,— WiUi your pennismon I will take occasion, from the recent annual distribution of blankets tjo tho natlvos, to make some observationB on these lmnleas flnii misnra.h1n nwntnrM. Pjnssino' mDiHIv away from life's arena,— doomed, apparently, 'by association - with the ' white man,' to sink into' £1 premature grave, -and yet laden with increased re sponsibilities and aggravated guilt, — it seems dosir able, to say the least, that there should be founii those who will occasionally stand forth to pleajd their cause, and to excite, if possible, practical interest and sympathy on 'their bohalf. In summer's thunder sliovver; Pet chance to sliine within the bow That fronts the sun at fall of day ; ' Perchance to sparkle in the flow ; Of fountains far away. Nought is lost: for e'en the tiniest seed, By wild birds borne, or breezes blown, . Finds something suited to its .ueed . AWiore'cr 'tis sown or grown ; Perchance finds susumance and soil .. . In some remote and desert place. Or 'mid the crowded homes of toil Sheds usefulness and grace. The touching tones of minstrel ait, The breathings of ton mournful Inte, Which we have heard with listening heart, Are not extiact when mute ; The language of some household song, . The perfume of spine cherished flower, Tho' gone from outward sense, belong To memory's after hour. So with pur words ; or harsh, or kind, littered, they are not all forgot; Tlicy leave their influence on the mind, . Pass on, bu...

THE NORTH AUSTRALIAN. IPSWICH, TUESDAY, MAY 12, 1857. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 12 May 1857

THE NORTH AUSTRAIIAN. TPSWICJI, TUESDAY, MAY 12, 1857. . We have been amused rather than edified 'by perusing the Courier t article on the 'Ex- penditure of Local Grants,' which appeared on the 25th ultimo, the object of Which is to insist upon tlie immediate outlay or themouey for public worlds lately voted by Parliament. Under ordinary circumstances, this would be right and proper, and substantial ; reasons ought to be shcwfr'by those who demur to the Couriers propositions. . Now, we are among those who do : most decidedly object to the Sydney Government ?either proceeding with, or having any control whatever over, purpublic works, until the question of Separation has been set at rest ; for we do not hesitate to nvow our conviction that by far the, greater portion of' the money already voted Ss uot destined to be expended in the manner, and for the objects, proposed by the Sydney Parliament.* In fact, the whole' of the money votes must be brought under the revision, of the Legisla...
