RETURS OF LANDBOROUGH. (Fron the B. M. Herald June 20) [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin and Central Queensland Advertiser — 5 July 1862

BBTCES OF I.15D8BOKOCOH. (Fron the ft M. Uenli. Jan» 20) Tue safe return of Landsborough'« party is a subject for congratulation. Explor ation hat already claimed sufficient victims, auld it would have been ead indeed if meit had perished while search ¡og for otliers who had been already long dead. Mr. Landsborough, however, does not appear to have encountered any great privations ; and had he been con- fronted with more difficulties than seem* to have bean the iwijhhtTiiriii III r as a bushman would prctiobr*- have enable him other to avoid or to triumph over them. But few disasters have happened to expeditions headed by practical bosh men. Experience seems to show plainly erinagh that that sort -of ability which is only to lie acquired by long residence on the ouUkirts of civilisation is, after all, the best qualification for au explorer. Scientific knowledge, courage, and entluiKijsm are excellent qualities, but even «hen possessed to the full, they do not compensate for the abse...

[We have good reason to believe that tbe marked trees referred to are not larjebbardta. From tbe description of treat tomajón in that part of the toonatry, and from Lekbhardt's usual, tnetbod of «sitting a large L with a tomahawk through the bark of the trees into tbe wood, bis marks would not only be covered with bark, tmt partially grown over with wood, and eonseqnently not easily recognised. Having made inqniry, we are inclined to the opinion that the trees deacribed by oar correspondent, anare marked by Landsborough, when on a arréate expedition some two years ago. The allusion to a camp of Walker s on the Ali«, and the desert country on the aorth west, eaggests the idea that our correspondent baa mistaken a creek of the Barkoo fur a creek of the Alice, and it ia possible that the Alice was «sroescd without ita being recognised. Walker bad no camp on the Alice. The matter, however, ia worthy of further inquiry.-Ea.J

[The following was received yesterday by the Inspector General of Police, from Mr. Morrisett, superintendent of Western Dis- trict Police]   Senior Sergeant Sanderson returned to Forbes yesterday with half the gold taken from the Escort on the 15th instant. It appears that when near Wheogo, Sander-   son's party saw a man at a distance riding   towards them, who, when he saw the police, at once turned and rode back full gallop— the police following on his track—ran to the top of a high mountain, from which four others had just descended. Having one of the police black trackers with them, the police were enabled to follow their tracks for twenty miles, and the bushrangers, find- ing themselves so hotly pursued, let their pack horse go, and on him was found about 1500 ounces of gild, a police cloak, and two of Terry's carbines lost by the guard of the   escort Sanderson's horses being quite   knocked up, the party was co...

To the Editor of the Bulletin. ! Snt,-I am sorry to obtrode on your valuable apace with this letter, but I really cannot refrain from publicly ex i pressing my feelings relative to the above institution. Aa yon are aware, last night was tlie usual monthly Ooeamittee Meeting, and duly advertised as such in your columns, bat to what purpose three out of a com- mittee of twelve and one secretary oat of tbe sue officers-who are ex ojffcto mem- bers of the committee-were the only persons present. After waiting one hour they were forced to leave without trans- acting any business, not having a quorum. When the School of Arts was formed, the first proposition carried at the gene- ral meeting which elected the officers and committee was, " that application should be made to the Government for a piece of land for erecting a building ;" the re- ' suit was the gift of an acre allotment on the reserve between William and Derby-streets-one of the best positions in the town.
