THROUGH JARRAHLAND. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 16 February 1883

THROUGH JARRAHLAND. — ^ ? — The concluding Paper with the above heading referring to this colony, contributed recently to two of our contemporaries ia in South Australia and Victoria, by a, special reporter whoso vitrit- r****. oX™^ months back hag already been' noticed: is, we think, sufficiently amusing, if not in teresting, to warrant us in reproducing ifc almost in extenso. We therefore publish a portion of the Paper in our present issuei promising to give the remainder as space' will permit : — Arid now for a final gathering up of the fragments of information, useful and other wise, which I pioked up on my trip. First,' then, I noticed, and that unmistakeably, that; the majority of West Australians— more particularly those who have made a little money — are intensely jealous of strangers; and, worst of all, are foolish enough to let that jealousy and distrust be seen. Forget ful of the aphorism of the 'ill bird,' they . invariably run down their country, presum ably to prevent ...

The Daily News. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 16 February 1883

UPbt IBailp &eto& FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1883. The various Roads Boards are about the most soundly abused public bodies in the Colony. We are constantly receiving letters from country resi dents grumbling at the miserable state of the roads in their several districts, and strongly condemning the incapacity and apathy exhibited by the various Boards in not properly forming the roads and providing for their up-keep. But there are always two sides to a question, and those settlers who have served on the Boards must be aware that these bodies are not so much to blame for the miserable! state in which the ma jority of our rural roads ? remain. While the settlers storm at the alleged incapacity and apathy displayed by the Boards in the discharge of their important duties, we, on the other hand, continue to receive loud com plaints from the various Roads Boards of their inability to carry on their work of constructing the new roads which are required, or of keeping those alre...

The Daily News. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 17 February 1883

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1883. 'To be or not to be?' is certainly not a rare quotation possessed, of all the charms of novelty, but it is one pregnant with meaning, one which seldom fails to arrest the attention and to excite the interest ,of those to whom it may be proposed. 'To be, or not to ber'' that is the question which we now put to our citizens, an answer to which wills have to be promptly decisively and — in fact almost — immediately given,' whether we are to have our City illuminated by gas, or whether we are -still for years to come to enjoy the extremely un- ? flattering distinction of being the inhabitants of the only Australian ! capital in which the darkness of night is not dissipated by gas illumination ? The indifference with which the citizens treat this important subject is peculiar in the extreme; and it almost seems as if they — as a body-; ? are supremely indifferent as' to' Whether they are still to go on light I ing their places of public worship, their stores,...

THE PEARLING FLEET. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 17 February 1883

THE PEARLING ILEET. By the Amur we have received some in formation of the pearling fleet, which have during the present season, we learn, chiefly ,; confined their operations to Roebuck Bay ! and the coast off Cape Villaret. Three earhng boats were met by Capt. O'Grady at the Lacepede Islands ; all of themhav ing been fortunate enough to procure suffi cient water from the guano holes to take them back to Roebuck Bay. From the appearance of the holes Capt. -CGrady is of opunon that a large quantity of r*ui . _ has fallen at the Lacopedes-during the past ' few months. The vessels he met at the islands were the Louisa, belonging to Mr! Gilhnan which had procured four tons o£ shell and a number of pearls ; the Harriett, ' belonging to Messrs Wrightson and Roy^ with five tons of shell and several ffood ' pearls; and another boat, belonging to 1 man named Jack Tagg. her owntr having .- fh« ™£ Slt?*?T P°d 1U°k- They spoke in -, the most satisfactory terms of the present season's general ta...

CRICKET. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 17 February 1883

CRICKET. By Longstop.: A match was played on Wednesday last at Fremantle, between an Eleven of the ' Fremantle CO. and an Eleven of the Swau ? CC. (formerly called the Mechanics C.fi \ - ;.J-'« .tos!,1wa|, won by Broomhall, who captained the Fremantle team ; and he S£ the Swan Eleven in first. They had nor been at the wickets many minutes' when it commenced to rain, and it continued showery off and on all the afternoon /onl smart shower driving all hands to the tenfc and thoroughly soaking the mat, makinsr it so slippery that the players could hardly travel on it. This, no doubt, accounts for the smallness of the scores. Nothing note worthy occurred during the garni, bufc there was a remarkable difference in the way the batsmen were disposed of in each team, there being but two of the Swan. Eleven bowled out in their first innings and only one in the second, while of dxl Fremantle Eleven, no less than eight were bowled out in the first and four in the second innings. It would be ver...
