THE MURDER OF MR. HALLIGAN. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 11 June 1869

THE MURDER OF MR. HALLIGAN* Palheb, who is said to be the actual murderer of Mr. Halligan, was arrested in the scrub on the bank of the Mary River, about two miles (com Gympie, at 2 a.m. on Monday, 31st ultimo: The man by whom he was handed over to inspector Lloyd had previously telegraphed here, and obtained a guarantee from the subscribers to the reward fund that they would pay for his capture independently of any reward the Government had offered or might offer. Palmer, Williams, and Taylor will now be placed in the dock together. The Eockhampton Bulletin has published the particulars of the murder as gleaned from the evidence : — Palmer and Williams, both armed, rode up to Halligan, one on each, side; Palmer seized Halligan. by the coat, and demanded his gold ; Halligan said, ' I know you, Palmer, I won't give up the gold ;' he then spurred bis horse into a brisk canter, and tried to beat off Palmer with his whip ; Palmer held his own bridle and Halligau's coat in one hand and a...

THE BROUGHAM PLACE MYSTERY. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 11 June 1869

THM.BMVGHAM PLACE MTSTEET. The evidence of the woman Larkins goes to prove that the unfortunate creature whose body was found in a sack in a lane off Brougham-place, did not meet her death there, but in Pitt-street, on the vacant croand lately occupied by Butt's Metropoli tan Hotel, which has recently been demolished to make room for a new building for the City Bank. In the yard or garden at the rear of the hotel when it was standing, was a large Norfolk Island pine, and other trees, and it was into one of the holes or ' b little hollow,' deBoribed by Larkins, left wheu these trees were rooted out some weeks siaoe, that Lizzy Moore fell when struck down. The body of the dead woman, if left where she wbb killed, would -have been much more likely to escape immediate observation than where it was afterwards plaoed in the lane off Brougham-place; and it is difficult to see, why the body was put into a sack and removed therei unless with the intention of removing it again, and throwing i...

A Gauaht Aciion.— The story of as gallant sn ' act as ever was rewarded by the 'V, 0.' or any ! other distinguished decoration is related by a special \ . correspondent :— ' While crossing from Algeria in a steamer during the recent rough weather, a child fell overboard. Tbe sea was literally running mountains high. In an instant General Roubel, a French officer, aged sixty, who was smoking on the * deck in undress uniform, and with a regimental ' great coat on, leaped into the sea, caught the child, and held it 'up by one arm while he buffeted the ; waves with the other, till, in that heavy sea, the sailors could let down tho boat, put of), aud save them both. Nobody cheered — the men admired, and the women wept. The sight was unparalleled, and will -never be forgotten by those who have wit* nessed it. . General Beubel has passed a jeunesse or ag'uesse—Vks some of Mr. £ingslake's dear friends — fought duels, and otherwise outraged the police. His conscience may rest tranquil.now.' ...
