IMPROVING STRAWBERRIES BY SELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 18 September 1896

; IMPROVING' STRAWBERRIES ^ ' BY SELECTlbk ' While tbe following will apply to fruits of all kinds it is especially effective with the strawberry. Tht* is no other fruit so suseeptable to improvement and none so variable and liable to ran down under neglect. To improve them one should follow the course pursued by successful breeders of fine stock and poultry. Breed up by selecting the most perfect individuals to raise from. Just before the berries ripen, go yourself over the best rows of each variety and carefully select young plants conspiciouH for vigour, earli ness, productiveness, ana general excellence and symmetry of fruit. Pull all fruit and blooms from these plants at once. Then with a garden trowel remove as large a clod as 1 practicable containing the plant, each variety separate. From these, well cultivated, raise plants to set young fields the coming year, and from "the fields thus set, again likewise reset the best, and so on for ever. The good effects uf this plan will...

THE PEOPLE'S FOOD. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 18 September 1896

THE PEOPLE'S FOOD. 1. We purchase needlessly expen ' sive kinds of food. We use the cost lier kinds of meat, fish, vegetables and the like, when the less expensive ones are just as nutritions and, when rightly cooked, are just as palatable. Many do this under the impression that there is some peculiar virtue in the dear food materials, and that economy in their diet is somehow detrimental to their dignity or their welfare. And, un fortunately, those who are most ex travagant in this respect are often the ones who can least afford it. 2. Our diet is apt to be one-sided. It often does not contain the different nutritive ingredients in the proper pro portions. We consume relatively too much of the fuel ingredients of food— those which are burned in the body and yield heat and muscular power Such are the fats of meat aud butter 5 the starch which makes up the larger part of the nutritive material of flour, potatoes, and sugar, of which su h euormous quantities are caieti in the United S...
