THE BHEEPBREEDERS' SHOW. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 7 July 1896

THE 8HEEPBREEDERS' SHOW. The Sheepbreeders' Show is over and, in spite of all drawbacks, it was a great success ! In the earlv part of the year it was prophesied that it would be a failure owing to two causes. The first was the drought in New South Wales. The second was that none of the Tasmanians or New Zealanders would be sending sheep this year after the disastrous sales of last year. There was a third reason given at times in whispers — there was a new secretary who knew nothing about sheep ! To take these objections in detail is interesting. Our drought broke up and the sheep were sufficiently re covered to make a fair show. The Taamanians and New Zealanders did send over their sheep and we trust that the result of this week's sale will justify their action. They de serve success, and it looks as if they would obtain it. Then the new secre tary ! It didn t matter much about that, because the committee consists of men who know what is required'for a successful show, and all they...

Alarm in New South Wales. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 7 July 1896

Alarm in New South Wales. A telegram from Nowra says : — ' ' Great consternation has been caused through a consignment of Queensland hides being brought into the district. They are said to be full of ticks, many of which are alive. The hides are per forated and also contain hundreds of dead ticks. Should the pest take hold in this district, it will mean utter ruin, as the principal industry here is dairy ng. Arrangements are being made to call a public meeting, and to ask the Government to take stringent measures to prevent the importation of the hides to the colony. It is reported here that cattle have been attacked at Turpen tine Range, 16 miles from Ncwra, but it is believed that the pest is the ordi nary buah tick.'

Sheep Directors Conference. LARGE GATHERING. THE SATURDAY NIGHT MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 7 July 1896

Sheep Directors Con ference. LARGE GATHERING. THE SATURDAY NIGHT MEETING. Lasb Saturday night the sheep directors' delegates met in Aarons' Exchange Hotel at 8 o'clock. The Oorowa Board had convened the meet ing, so the chairman, Mr. A. Anderson, was duly voted to the chair. Previous to assembling the chairman had directed the hon. secretary CMr. R. McMillan) to admit only sheep direc tors to the meeting, but large stock owners, members of Boards, would be admitted to the room. This was ar ranged for by an old trick of the secretary's, who put a row of tables across the centre of the room, leaving only a small opening at one end. At this gate the delegates were drafted, but it was not considered necessary to raddle them, though one of the sheepmen offered to do so. When all was ready there were 35 sheep directors in the yard and about 16 outside, but it appeared afterwards that some of the outsiders ought to have been inside. The following delegates were present, inside the fence : ...

Hereford Cattle. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 7 July 1896

Hereford Cattle. ' Tussock ' in the ' Canterbury Times' says : — The Hereford breed of cattle are supposed to be aboriginal, and bred for many generations in the county in England from whose name their own is derived. Very little that is trustworthy is know of their history earlier than the year 176b. lhe great improver of the breed was Mr. Benja min Tomkins, of Brook House, Here fordshire. Historical records inform us that about the year 1766 Ben was working for hire for a good breeder, and, as in that year he married his employer's daughter, there is little doubt that by that union he got a start in life, for shortly afterwards we find him striking out for himself. He commenced breeding with a selec tion^ two cows, chosen entirely for their beef-producing character. From this small beginning Mr. Tomkins worked, and it may safely be inferred that his work was done carefully, wisely and well, and in such a manner as to fix a character and type in his herd. Mr. Tomkins finally took u...

A Stock Agent's License. TO THE EDITOR " S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 7 July 1896

A Stock Agent' s License. ro THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir, — I am very pleased to see the question of licensed stock agents being opened up in your columns. I cer tainly think every person trading as a stock agent, on any pretence what ever, should pay a substantial license fee, say, £10 per annum. In nearly every country town, and I have no doubt in the city also, there are persons calling themselves stock and station agents who neither pay for an auctioneer's license, office rent, or clerk, but walk from one hotel to another and daily do the block, and watch legitimate agents' offices. If they see a buyer with an agent, or coming out of his office they follow him up, and, if successful in finding out what he intends inspecting, immediately runs it down, in the hope of putting him off and getting a cut in. Such business bhould be put to an end, and I have no doubt a license fee of .£10 would be a step in that direction. Thanking you in advance, Yours, etc., ' A Country A...
