The Introduction of the Sinaic Revelationt [CONTINUED FROM LAST ISSUE.] [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

The Introduction of the Sinaic Revelationt [continued from last issue.] p' Having laid down this fundamental principle the divine message which Moses had brough to the elders of Israel, the two main pillars o the law are announced in these words, ' And ye sh all be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. lhe hrst signihes ireedom, equality and consciousness of human dignity and honor ; the second signifies the absolute reign of rigbteousners, morality, humanity. pur*£y, truthfulness in the nation and its individuals : the combination of those virtues in sentiment and fact is holiness. There were no priests in Israel when Moses announced this divine message ; ' a kingdom of priests ' could not refer to any of Israel's priesthood. There was a mighty caste of priests in Egypt, and this was the highest of all castes beside the warriors. There were castes in Egypt from the highest down to the lowest pariah, the swine breeders, the embalmers offciae dead, and ?other hapless classes ...

The Birthday of Liberty. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

The Birthday of Liberty. ' And ye shall observe the unleavened bread, for on this self-same day I have brought out your hosts from Egypt, and ye shall celebrate this day to generations, as a statute everlasting.' — Exodus xii, 17. j As Nature is robing itself in vernal garb, and winter is about to rob its eyes awakening from the sleep of summer; as the birds cheerfully warble their sweet melodies in the balmy atmosphere of the opening autumn — all so indicative of that freedom which the Creator designed for his human children —the Pass over of the Lord comes to greet the children of Israel with the message of yore : ' I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God.' These were the assuring words of God at the time He delivered our fathers from the Egyptian bondage. Since then nearly 4000 years have flown into the irre sistible stream of time Nations have come into existence and crumbled into dust, vanishing like smoke. Tyre, Sidom, Phoenecia, Carthage, even the mightv Rome ...

The Jews Only Hope. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

The Jews Only Hope. 'What is the remedy for a situation which is a disgrace to Europe? We have none to suggest, because we only believe in one, which will not be accented. When all the Christian churches plead for the Jew as they plead for all other men who are unjustly oppressed, the Jews will be safe ; but in a generation which has complacently endured the massacre of the Armenians for the oflience of being Christians, we can have little hope that the course will be immediately followed. The other remedies suggested are all useless. The great facts of history are not alferable to suit dreams of philanthropists ; and onp of the biggest of them is that the Hebrew race never changes and is unchangeable. It is, and it will remain, as it was in the days of the Pharaohs, whom, as Lord Beaconsfield said, ' it saw and survived,' the most separate and the earthliest of all races, with the highest power of throwing up men of spiritual genius and mental grandeur. There is one earthly hope of...

' . . . brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out - of the house of slavery.' This week we celebrate the deliverance from Egypt, and the mighty deeds wrought as sign& ,/and wonders to mark the occasion. Living as 'We now are, free from even the cares and fears 'that surround our brethren in other countries, we may find time to contemplate — and even seek a desire to analyse— the doings of our ancestors about the time which brought deliver ance. From this .we learn the tidings of the labors, trials, punishments, cruelties, and j? the misery the Jew had borne in the service of the taskmasters of Egypt.. We cannot realise ijhat men, women, and children were treated worse than beasts are to-day. Driven, flogged, starved, and all without the consolation of j knowing that in the future there was a rest ,, beyond the grave ; without a sign that the God -'which had delivered Isaac; had preserved Ishmael in the wilderness ; had led Joseph to ^the highest place in the land, would yet...

The Sympathy of Religion. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

The Sympathy of Religion. Every race has some conception of a creator and Governor of the world, in whom devout souls recognise-, a father also. Even where, as among the Buddhists,. ?. the reported teachings of the founder seem to ignore the existence of a Deity, the popular instinct is too strong for the teacher, so that the Buddhist races are not atheistic. Every race has some conception of an existence after detth. Everv race in some way recog nises by its religious precepts the brotherhood of man. The whole gigantic system of cast in Hindostan has grown up in defiance of the Veda1?, which are now be ing evoked to abolish it. Trie Hitopedesa of Vishnu. Sarman forbids caste* v Is this one of our tribe or a stranger ? is the calculation of the narrow minded ^ but, to those of a noble disposition, the earth itself is but one family.' A Kosher Dinner. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

A Kosher Dinner. A corresp ndent of the Pall Mall Gazette has been ?dining at a kosher restaurant, and describes the meal as follows : I had a--ked to have everything explained to me, and before the hors d'asuvre were brought in, the master of the ceremonies, taking a book from the top of one of cupboards, a solemn little prayer which is really beauti ful in its simplicity. With the Grace comes the cere tnonv of the host hrenkinir hr^ari riinnincr thp Virnkpn pieresin salt, and handing them round to his guests, who sit with covtred heads Before the Sv.up was- brought up the master explained that the Frimsell was made Irom stccn;, oiid a paste of eggs and flour rolled into tiny threads like vermicelli, while the Matsoklese had in it balls of unleavened bread. When the soup w.is brough1. the two were combined . and the tiny threads and t he balls of flour both swam in a liquid which had somewhat the taste of vermicelli soup. Human Powers of Reasoning. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 April 1898

Human Powers of Reasoning'. It excites us to wonder frequently to think of what human powers of reasoning we possess. Though we owe a good deal to cul'ure, which has somewhat per fected us in the art, still the aborigines of this country, - unlettered as they were, have afforded us many instances of their custom of obseivation that come up to us or reach a higher standard than that beautiful story of Thatcher's which he gives in his ' Lives of the Indians.' ' Owing partly to his organization, doubtless, as well as to his mods of living from childhood up, the senses of the Indian are extremely acute. '; It is related, in modern times, that a hunter belong ing to one of the Western tribes on his return home to his hut one day discovered that his venison, which had been hung up to dry, had been stolen. After taking observations on the spot he set off in pursuit of the thief, whom he traced tnrough the woods. Having gone a little distance he met sums persons, of whom he inquiied whether...
