A VISI' TO THEr " PII'RIPA.iETIC. P[I ILOSOPIIEi." (From our Speinal Heporterj ) "' Smoking," observed thie Perip·itetip, as he blew a cloud, is a great institution.` Everybody. smokes. It appears as if the population of Victoria had been converted into locomotives, blowing clqouds of smoke as if they meant to kpap up a high pi;etsure of 0,O.niles an hour. The schoolboy begins by smoking a piece of rolled brown paper, knowing that it caugiht in the not le will get his ears baoed. The young man whose leard *is just sprouting smokes because he thinks it will mnake himi look like n man, and men smoke fro:n habit, Somei thiik it does themn good, others are certain it does thornm harm, and a grant proportion smoke because they set others do it. Mr V. It is a, :ell known fact that Mr Smith is no respecter of ptr ons in examining a witness who is giving ,dverse evidence to his client; and- Mr Furnoll having come before him on one or' more occasions haid to "'go through tho mill,' and was treated, as a "jack in office." Most people who have to submit to a vexatious. cross-examination, make n liberal allowance to a lawyer who.uses.is.nability on behalf, of his client, even at the sacrifice of friendship. Not sO, however, with Mr Furnell,.who has chosen to make a personal matter of Mr Smith's zeal, for, his.clients, and. to. say un. pleasant things of him to others ; this has led to a quarrel and hence the assault. NOTES BY THE MAN WITH A NOSE. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 18 February 1870

NOTES BY.TIlE MAN WITH A. NOSE. ----+-- 1 thought it was all over, but, it seems not. The Braador has rattled his kettles and saucepans, and given it to me again full in the nose; and of course I. must strike out. Keep. the ring clear, and -show. fair play. The Brazir'rs witty, [or. wants to appear so. Hero 'is a. sample,- " Blow him, blow his nose." There's .wit 'for you; quite a dazz ling coruscation, isn't it? So bright that it has made me blind, and'l cannotsee it. Per haps the pumpkin growers of Mansfield can, if so, I have no objection, and am glad. The Itinerant Brazier ought, however, to forgive, even if he cannot forget, and stop. trying: to poke -fn. at-my nose, for have I not given him something whereon to descant, unless he would call my nose nothing! As to blowing it, that I can do for myself when necessary. as I wear a rag for the very purpose, and I won't think of applping to anybody, much less the Brazier, to do it for me. I do claim to report specially for the ladie...

CRICKET MATCH. YEA & DISTRICT. (GRANT'S ELEVEN) V. ALEXANDRA ELEVEN. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 18 February 1870

CR1ICKET MAT C':. ---c- YEA & DISTJITCT. (GRANT'S ELEVEN) V. ALEXANDRA..EI4EYEN. This match was played on Tuesday last under a` broilig sun. In. consequence of the excessive heat very few. persons.visited the ground: The Alexandra team: won the toss for the first innings,. and sent their op ponents. to the wickets. The first five wickets having.gone down-for 18 runs, the game was considered, all up, but Blunn's batting soon raised the drooping spirits of 'bis party, and the innings closed for the very fair score of (4. The manner in which Blunn handled the willow deserves special mention; he played throughout with skill and judgment, and the stand that lie made against the real good bowling opposed to him, proves htm. to be a fine batsman.. The Alexandra Eleven were quite confi dent of success from the first, and the good stand made by Captain Anderson increased their confidence. The bowling of the two Mesers Grants and the good fielding. soon brought them to grief,. having:...

The drive in Fitzrerald'a clain caved in the other day, he is iiow raising all before him, consisting of quiartz and mullock, which he expects will pay good wages. (To the Editor,) Sir--I trust that you will allow me; as -a member of the Alexandra Cricket Club, to offer a few remarks respecting an impression that appears to have gained ground amongst certain parties in Alexandra in reference to the said Club . This impression is that'the Club is composed of what is termed by thes' parties, " snobs" and " uppish' characters," who will not associate with working 'men, nor allow them to join the Club. Now, Sir, I em in a position to state that this quite un true, as no person whatever, be he whom he may, has ever been denied the privilege of becoming a member of the Club. The Club itself is composed essentially of working men; who "earn their daily bread by the sweat of their brows," and I think it ill became, any' person while the Alexandra ?even were doing battle for the honor of-our township, on the occasion of the late match, Yea tand District v Alexandra, to make the remarks that were then so freely uttered. . It showed very, bad taste, to s...
