Fox Hunting , & c . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 31 December 1853

Fox Hunting , & c . BV AM OLD SPORTSMAN . Although it haa been asserteg by Bickford , that a fair fox hunter , and a foolish one are sfnonynous , we are not warranted in supposing that it ever entered into his imagination that his meaning would be so far distorted , or used in such an extended sense as to apply to two packs of hounds being employed in the destruction of one unhappy fox . His idea of a fox chase was , that it should be short , sharp , and decisive ; but where the scent would not admit of auoh a termination , that it was allowable for a huntsman to avail himself of any circumstances which might bring him upon better terms with his game ; and upon this point , I believe almost all professors of the noble science agree with him . The present generation of huntsmen are ever too ready to adopt this part of Bickford s text , as particular !) suitable to their own practice , without stopping to inquire whether it might form an exception to the general rule of fo...

YANKEE SULLIVAN [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 7 January 1854

YANKEE SULLIVAN Life and Battles IN THE f n ^ - $ h g OF Arranged and Compiled from various authorities , expressly for The New York Clipper . * BV THE EDITOR . Tho result of the last mentioned fight , wherein Sullivan defeated a man who was much superior to him in size , and strength , gave renewed encouragement to the friends of the Yankee , who were in raptures with tbe fighting abilities so bravely displayed by the cunning Yankee . The ruse adopted by liim to save for his backers and friends the money sported on the event of first blood was looked upon as a capital good thing , and so it was , though how far it ¦ was in accordance with honest and correct principles , wc are not bound to say , though it has doubtless served as an ex ample to subsequent competitors of the wily Irishman , to keep a bright look out upon the manoiuvres of the cunningboxer . The manner in which Secor stood the whipping , reflected great credit upon him as a man of true courage , and had he been posses...

WRESTLING- [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 7 January 1854

WRESTLING- THK BR 00 KIVN CONTROVERSY . SINCE the late wrestling match in Brooklyn between Molyneaux aid Coit , there has been much controversy respecting the abilities of the two men . We have taken no part in the argument , but have given the use of our columns to both parties to make known their grievances , and to settle the dispute existing between them . Each man ( . has challenged the other , anti each challenge has also been readily accepted , but as yet no match has been made . We last week published a letter from Coit , in which he offered to £ make a match with Molyneaux for the sum of $ 500 a side . The following letter ^ from Molyneaux is in answer to Coit , and it will be seen that the to former ^ willing accept challenge of die latter for the sum stated , pr a still larger amount . As each man wishes his opponent to make the match at his house , it seems probable that no match can be ^ made at either house ; and we would recommend the parties to name some gentleman , ...
