Agnonltoral Department Crop Reports . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 8 August 1868

Agnonltoral Department Crop Reports . We give below an abstract of the report by the Department of Agriculture on the condition of crops . in July , as estimated from the reports of correspondents of the Department in all parts of the United States : CORN—The most remarkable factjn connection with the corn crop of the present year is the great increase of its average in the South , the difference In number of acres , between the present and preceding year being more than two , million and a half . A slight decrease is apparent lu the eastern seaboard States , resulting from the unpropitlous character of the recent cold and backward Spring , which sadly interfered with planting . A careful estimate of the average shows a decrease of 49 , 609 acres in Maine . New Hampshire , Massachusetts , Rhode Island , Connecticut , New Jersey , New York and Maryland , and an increase of over 8 , 129 ,- 125 acres in the other States . The figures show an increase of over 3 , 000 , 000 acres in corn...

One bright day in March was here already to tell the peoj pie in the great Island city , that ont in the woodlands and on the farms tbe fresh little hearts of the buds were swelling so that they soon must burst their , vests , and the roots were waking from thtir long sleep so like death , and were pushing and struggling in their graves to let the new life , the tiny green blade , up Into the sunshine of a new year . The warm air , spiced with seabreezes , was full of families of pigeons , —* he city substitute for wild birds , —that came sailing down in every street to look for stray grains and crumbs where the snow had melted ; and now aud then a shrill crow issued from some back yard where a tall Shanghai perched upon the fence , stretching his neck in the vain effort to look over the high brick baildmgs , and salute his cousins on long Island or Hoboken Heights . THE POULTRY YARD . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 8 August 1868

THE POULTRY YARD . Why Cannot fowls be Kept in Laree Rooks ? It is pretty generally conceded that no one Is successful who attempts to keep together a large number of fowls , and that those who keep the smallest number together generally obtain the greatest proportionate number of eggs . And this Is , we think , not only true , but easily to be accounted for . . . . Every one who has kept fowls knows that they are very uncleanly birds . They even wash themselves in the dirt , and that evidently not for the purpose of cleanliness , but to rid themselves of vermin . They pre fer clean light sand , because if in the sun % it is generally , warmer , and it is easily moved , but they seem equally to enjoy any soft dry earth , although it may not be very sweet and clean . They are notoriously filthy in their coops , roosting under each other , and taking no pains to avoid the droppings , soiling their food , water and nest * with their droppings , and doing no act apparently toward cleanl...
