FIGHT FIRE FROM STAGE [Newspaper Article] — Player — 12 January 1912

FIGHT FIRE FROM STAGE SPRINGFIELD , Mass ; , Jan . 9 . —When fire was discovered under the stage of the Plaza theater yesterday the firemen raised the curtain and turned on the footlights and for over an hour fought the flames from the stage . It looked like a stage representation of a fire but it was real . There was but little damage to the theater proper , the flames being confined to the store rooms under the stage . Someone wired to a motion picture photographer and he rushed to the fire with all of his apparatus but got there just as the firemen were leaving . He was inconsolable when he found out he had missed the chance for a realistic picture .

THEATERS IN HAMBURG , GERMANY , FAILING AS BOOKING CENTERS [Newspaper Article] — Player — 12 January 1912

THEATERS IN HAMBURG , GERMANY , FAILING AS BOOKING CENTERS Communication from M . E . Fitzgerald , Now Abroad , Say Conditions at Noted Try-Out Place Are Not Now as They Once Were . M . E . Fitzgerald , of Fitzgerald and His Club Juggling Girls , writes THE PLAYER his opinion of theatrical conditions as they affect the vaudeville performer at the Hansa theater , Hamburg , Germany , where he is now on his last half month s engagement . Mr . Fitzgerald says that the Hansa is second only to the Winter Gardens in Berlin as the best place in all of Germany for the showing of acts and the booking of future time on the continent . In spite of this fact , Mr . Fitzgerald says that , with his present act which has been meeting with success and which he regards as an excellent one , he has not booked a single date as the result of the engagement at the Hansa . He recalls that about twelve years ago he and his brother played the same theater , and as the result of a twenty-three-day engagement...

WE DESIRE TO CALL THE READER ' S ATTENTION TO THE FORM OF C ONTRACT [Newspaper Article] — Player — 12 January 1912

WE DESIRE TO CALL THE READER S ATTENTION TO THE FORM OF C ONTRACT used by the Interstate Amusement Company , as published in this issue of THE PLAYER , and to point out in numerical order the unfair , illegal , and inequitable provisions in this contract . PARAGRAPH 1 : Imposes the . duty upon the artist to render services at the theater specified , or at such other place in the city njentioned as may be directed by the manager . It also provides for services on Sunday , which provision in most states make the contract unenforceable in law . Where the actor desires to play on Sunday , he should have a separate contract for his Sunday performances and a separate contract for the remainder of the week , so that he does not jeopardize his recovery for services to be rendered on week days . PARAGRAPH 2 : Places the duty upon the artist to put the manager in possession of sufficient photographs at least two weeks before the beginning of the engagement under the penalty of a cancellation ...

GENERAL NEWS BRIEFS . [Newspaper Article] — Player — 12 January 1912

GENERAL NEWS BRIEFS . Walter Hawley and Natalie Olcott were booked to play week of Jan . 1 at Troy , N . Y ., to produce their act , Monday Afternoon . Inasmuch as this was a return date , they having played at the same house last September , Manager Freidman requested them to revive their old sketch , Just Married a Week , for the last half of the week , which they did , and the act made an enormous hit . It is not their intention to use this sketch , as Monday Afternoon is a big hit , and will be used on all their future bookings . Eugene Keith is in their support , playing the part of Props . He was formerly with The Subway , an act which made a hit on the Orpheum Circuit . G . Lewis De Long , while playing Cripple Wing at the Academy theater , Hagerstown , Md ., was taken suddenly ill at the end of the act and fell into his wife s arms . The audience thought Ft was a part of the act , and vigorously demanded an encore . This could not be given , as he was unconscious . He was ta...
