Progress of Arizona A Uootl Itcc onl aim Good Advice. It is quite generally admitted that Arizona has made greater and more substantial progress during the last year than any other section of the Pacific Coast, and thus far nothing has occurred to impede this'progrcss or to destroy the faith of outside capitalists in the richness and genuine character of our mines, Wo have just now reached a critical stage in our onward course, a stage at which the greatest caution should be observed Dy our mining men. The plain truth will se cure riches enough for all, while a few tricks, sharp games (so called) mixed with a little fraud may retard our prog ress for years. The Mining and Scien tific Press, has the following on Ari- zoua which is good, and to the point: The Territory of Arizona has, com par...

The Citizen. FRIDAY, - FEBRUARY 1, 187S. Coauty Xudcbteiluetts Hint Jiupervl- Of late these haye been subjects of! mucli and varied comment in the Ari zona journals. Yavapai's indebtedness, as per statements of its own papers, is about 150,000 either actually incur red or the liability created by law. Yuma appears, as per Seuttnel's state ment, about $30,000 in debt. Pima is understood to owe above $30,000; Mar icopa and Mohave arc considerable in debt, just how much we have not seen publicly stated. Comparatively speak ing, Pinal is free of debt. In commenting upon county indebt edness, various views have been ex pressed by the local papers, but the general view taken is that it is a mis- fortune a matter of public discour. agement. Whether the debts in ques tion arc or are not misfortunes to the several counties, depends upon circum Btances, and should not be thoughtless ly used as levers to break down credit and prevent enterorise, while officers and individuals ae at fault, and ...

5 I" sr mis us IT lb. i M4I i. 1 I If J&" III, i- !151 The Citizen. FRIDAY. FEBRUARY S, 1S7S. Timber Affulrs. By timber affairs, we mean every thing that pertains to the growth, pro per use of, and Koverntnent action in relation to timber. It would be impos sible to touch a tithe of the points in a newspaper article adapted to our col umns. Just now we call attention to the reported appearance of the Secre tary of the Interior, Commissioner of the General Land Office and the prin cipal legal adviser of the Department, before the proper Committee in Con gress, to urge an appropriation of $45, 000 to defray expenses in prosecutions against those who unlawfully cut or lake timber from the public lands. Heretofore but $5000 has been appro priated for the purpose, and every reader of The Citizen and of most any other frontier paper, kno;v3 what annoyance and personal expense and damage have been caused by the use of this small sum. Increase it nine fold, and then imagine the terror a...

To aav the least, it seems unfortii- nate thnt opposition to any live rail way builders constructing a road to. wards the heart of Arizona, should arise in this Territory. In the language of the celebrated civil service order of Presi dent Haves about political action,- the right to oppose, speak or write in oj position to this or any other company, is! not denied, but the policy is question able. The cry about the Southern Pacific being a monopoly, is amply answered by saying that any company that builds a railway through Arizona on any route north or south of, or along the Gila Valley, must be a monopoly or have the ability to be one. To op pose the company because it is a mo nopoly is equivalent to opposing any company that undertakes to build a railroad. To oppose it because it has present ly stopped extension eastward of Yu ma, is an ...

For over a year past the relation that bilvcr bears to our finances lias been looming up as a great issue before the country, and has in the present Con. gress, become so prominent as to cause all other issues to disappear. It is in no way a political or rather a party question, leading members of both parties being found working earnestly on cither side, but it has become a sectional measure almost entirely. The eastern or more strictly, the northeastern States arc, excepting Penn sylvania, solidly for a single metallic standard, while the western and south ern States are equally as solid for the bimetallic standard. The Pacific States, excepting of course Nevada, do not seem to have taken any defined post tion in the discussion. Senators Sar- irent and Mitchell are in favor of gold alone, while Senators Booth and Grovcr desire the remonitization of silv...
