CANDY OF THE WORLD. (';'hat cer Nations Use as Confectionery-The Method of Making-Some Pg!sib!e Pointers to the American Confectit ner. BY L. LODIAN. Only one nation to my knowledge mnaacs a point of putting up lines of I nuow white biscuits or crackers. To produce them, they just use the rice flour-whitest of all flours. The pure I white goods are always made very sweet and solid-sometimes quite hard i in f!at. The sweetening agent is just the sorghum syrup peculiar to China. I For it is only the Chinese who seem to aT'e:'t this snow white cereal con f,,. ri,,i ry. Our own American whitest I era;~ 'i s would look dingy white iln , ,lr!parison. I first came across these (lirilg travels in the Orient in '95-'96, I:;! ne:;er eared much for their pecu ll:ir ric:y intensely sweet taste--almost r:.minding one more of candy than of cu0' feet ionery. Why the Chinese should rival each ot.her in the prod mction of these snow white biscuits I never learned, but be lieve It is only a fad. Pos...

TRUE DEMOCRAT OFFICE DESTROYED BY FIRE ON ITS SEVENTEENTH ANNIVERSARY DAY. ornday FIorning the Plant of The True Demecrat Was a Smoking Mass of Ruins, But Here's Your Paper On Time Today. The True Democrat's seven tenth birthday was a sad one, after all. Within the first hour of Feb. C, the building and plant had been entirely destroyed by fire. Shortly after midnight, tVe watchman at the Feliciana Oil Co., A. D. Thoms, perceived t ie fire and gave the alarm, the whistle at the power-house awaking sleepers and quickly a small but energetic crowd had gathered. Hose carts Nos. 1 and 2 were rushed to the scene, a good stream of water was put Sn, and though too late to save the True Democrat office or its contents, did such excellent work rs to save the proprietor's resi dence which,'at the rear abutted on it within a distance at its far thest point of 30 ft. and at its nearest, 10 ft. The cause of the fire is hardly to be conjectured. There had been no fire in the print shop since the ...
