They hud started out nd were wsyUid. ll loft the Fort on tho same day after witnessing this but left by a route not watohod by the savages ; strik ing the trail four or five milos out, and thus oenping the watching Indians. In 1818, Jorcmiah Everett carried tho mail oo this route. At that time the trail bad been chanced, striking off from tho ri- vor between two white oak troes standing on what w.is then the upper part of tho Wuittakor llcserve, and now being near tho line between James Moore's and John L. Cole's farms, some two miles North of town. A Mr. Harris had then settled on Fortago river where the trail crossed, and kept tho mail carrier over night. From two to four days, often three, were required to perform the trip.
